Leaders of Ca Mau province received the Prime Minister's Certificate of ranking the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea as a special national monument (Vam Lung Wharf - Ca Mau province).

Vam Lung Wharf was one of the four main wharves receiving weapons from the North to the South during the years of the resistance war against America to save the country, creating the miracle of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea.

According to documents, after Dong Khoi in 1960, the revolutionary movement in the South developed strongly, the need for weapons support for the Southern battlefield grew, while land transportation routes were facing many difficulties.

Therefore, the Party Central Committee and President Ho Chi Minh decided to establish Group 759 (the predecessor of Brigade 125, Naval Region 2 today) with the task of researching and opening a strategic North-South military transport route by sea, organizing the transport of cadres, soldiers and weapons to support the revolution in the South.

Colonel Khuu Ngoc Bay, former Commander of Regiment 162, spoke at the ceremony.

After a period of preparation, on October 11, 1962, the first train of the "Unnumbered Train" codenamed "Phuong Dong 1" carrying 30 tons of weapons from Do Son wharf (Hai Phong) opened the way to the South.

On October 16, 1962, the ship Phuong Dong 1 commanded by Captain Le Van Mot and political commissar Bong Van Dia crossed thousands of nautical miles and safely arrived at Vam Lung port. This was the ship of the "Unnumbered Ships" that opened the strategic transport route on the East Sea - the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea.

Vam Lung Wharf is associated with Unit 962, whose mission is to protect the safety of trains entering and leaving the wharf, secretly receive, hide weapons and transport weapons to Liberation Army units to serve in combat.

According to documents, of the 124 ships received by Group 962, the ports of Ca Mau cluster received 76/124 ships, of which Vam Lung Wharf alone received 68 ships, with more than 4,300 tons of weapons and ammunition. Therefore, Vam Lung Wharf was the port that received the first ship of the "Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea" and was also the port that received the most arrivals of this legendary road.

With the great historical value of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea, on November 26, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1473/QD-TTg ranking the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea as a special national monument, including the main wharves: K15 Wharf - Hai Phong City, Vung Ro Wharf - Phu Yen Province, Loc An Wharf - Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province and Vam Lung Wharf - Ca Mau Province.

As a historical witness, Colonel Khuu Ngoc Bay (former Commander of Regiment 162) said he was very happy and moved when the beloved and precious Ben Vam Lung Relic Site was recognized as a special national relic.

“The term “Port in the heart of the people” was not coined by an organization or individual, but it comes from the hearts and actions of the local government and people. That precious solidarity has created a “Port in the heart of the people” that has remained in our minds throughout the war against America until now,” Colonel Khuu Ngoc Bay was moved.
