VHO - On the afternoon of November 23, at the Hue Imperial City, Thua Thien Hue province held a ceremony to receive the UNESCO Certificate of Inscription on the Documentary Heritage "The reliefs on nine bronze cauldrons in the Hue Royal Palace".
The program was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong, Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker - Chief Representative of UNESCO in Vietnam, leaders of ministries, branches and leaders and people of Thua Thien Hue province.
At the 10th plenary session of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP) in Ulan Bator, Mongolia on May 8, 2024, the dossier "Reliefs on nine bronze cauldrons in the Hue Royal Palace" of Vietnam was recognized as a UNESCO Asia-Pacific documentary heritage.
This is also Vietnam's 10th documentary heritage, including 3 world documentary heritages and 7 Asia-Pacific documentary heritages.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker - Chief Representative of UNESCO in Vietnam emphasized: The world's documentary heritage is the heritage of all of us. Those heritages need to be preserved and conserved in their entirety. The relief works cast on the nine bronze cauldrons in the Hue Imperial Palace (also known as the Nine Cauldrons) have preserved the values of exchange and interaction between the cultures of Vietnamese society and East Asian countries.
Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker also said that UNESCO highly values the long-term partnership with Thua Thien Hue - where the conservation of Hue monuments has been carried out with great enthusiasm and achieved remarkable results. 30 years ago, UNESCO and the world community recognized the urgency in cooperating with Vietnam to preserve and protect these precious heritages.
According to Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong, Hue is honored to be the first locality in the country to have a heritage recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage, the Complex of Hue Monuments, recognized in 1993.
At the same time, it is also the first place in Vietnam to have the Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Hue Royal Court Music, in 2003. This is a testament to the richness and diversity of the cultural heritage system with global value in the ancient capital of Hue.
"The reliefs on nine bronze cauldrons in the Hue Royal Palace" were recently listed in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Documentary Heritage List, giving Thua Thien Hue the position of being the only locality in the country with 8 heritages recognized by UNESCO.
The Nine Tripod Cauldrons were cast in 1835 under the reign of King Minh Mang and completed in 1837, and have been placed in the courtyard of The To Mieu Temple ever since. On these nine bronze cauldrons, there are 162 reliefs (positive plates), considered a vivid encyclopedia of images about Vietnam at that time. The Nine Tripod Cauldrons were recognized as a National Treasure by the Prime Minister in 2012.
