Right from the 2nd and 3rd days of the Lunar New Year 2024, many fishermen in coastal communes of Binh Thuan such as Phan Ri Cua, Binh Thanh, Chi Cong, Mui Ne, Tan Thanh, Thuan Quy... were excited to send their boats out to sea to welcome the "luck" of the sea at the beginning of the new year.
As usual, at 2am on the second day of Tet, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam (Minh Tan quarter - Phan Ri Cua town, Tuy Phong) took his boat out to get lucky with the hope of bringing back lots of fish and shrimp. Although the Tet atmosphere was still bustling in the hamlets, many fishermen fishing near the shore had returned to their daily lives. Along with Mr. Tam, many fishing baskets fishing near the shore were also excitedly leaving the wharf to get a day's catch. At around 9am, the Ben Do area became bustling with the laughter of fishermen and traders as the fishing baskets returned with lots of fresh shrimp and squid. In particular, Mr. Tam could not hide his joy, excitedly showing off because he had "hit" a catch of nearly 2 tons of crabs priced at about 40,000 VND/kg, helping him earn tens of millions of VND. Mr. Tam happily said: “A few years ago, there were also a lot of crabs. I still remember last year, on the first trip of the new year, I also harvested nearly 100 kilos of crabs. This year, the harvest was better. The crew was very happy, each person shared a few million dong. Hopefully, the next trips this year will be smooth and the boats will sail safely.”
Not only Mr. Tam's boat has the "luck" of the sea, but most of the other boats or fishing nets that dock at the port earn at least 1 million VND/person. Since the beginning of the year, the price of green crabs and type 1 slugs has been quite high, traders buy them at the basket for up to 600,000 VND/kg, type 2 and 3 crabs are also priced at 400,000 - 500,000 VND/kg. In addition to crabs, shrimps, squids, many fishing nets also catch fresh herring, mackerel, hairtail, clams, snails... Although the price of seafood during Tet is at a high level, many people still order them as gifts for friends far away or for families holding parties at home.
Accordingly, cobia costs from 250,000 - 300,000 VND/kg, squid ranges from 180,000 - 250,000 VND/kg, herring costs 30,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, snails cost from 350,000 - 500,000 VND/kg, mackerel costs 180,000 - 200,000 VND/kg... During Tet, the number of tourists visiting Tuy Phong district increases significantly, so seafood is an indispensable dish in meals. This is also one of the reasons why seafood prices during Tet increase. However, according to many tourists, this is an acceptable price because the seafood here is fresh and delicious, not only eating on the spot, many tourists also stop by Phan Ri Cua market to buy as gifts.
It can be seen that after the first sea trips of the year, many fishermen returned to shore happily, because the trip was on a certain day, but they did not expect to bring back quite a lot of spoils from the sea. According to the fishermen here, in the past few days, the north wind has been blowing strongly, so after a few days, the baskets stayed on the shore, waiting for favorable weather to continue going out to sea.
In addition to the small boats, basket boats, and fishing boats that go back and forth inshore during the day, many large ships also choose the 6th day of Tet as the day to set sail for the first fishing trip of the year. According to tradition, fisherman Le Van Hai (Hai Tan quarter, Phan Ri Cua town, Tuy Phong) still "set sail" on the 6th day of Tet. After completing the sea worship and praying for safety, his boat sets sail with the hope that the first fishing trip of the year will be "successful" and bring in a lot of fish and shrimp, as a good sign and of great spiritual significance for the next fishing trips. Fisherman Le Van Hai said, "The "sea" trip is not only to pray for luck, but if fishermen receive "sea luck", they will have a high income, because seafood prices often increase sharply during Tet. Last year, fishermen encountered many difficulties, many fishing trips did not earn enough to cover expenses. Hopefully this year, the weather will be more favorable, with abundant seafood sources so that fishermen will have the motivation to go offshore."
In general, the mood of fishermen in the first trips to sea in the new year is very excited and happy because they caught a lot of fish and crabs and sold them at high prices. With the positive signals from the first trips to sea in the year, it is believed that the situation of exploiting and catching aquatic products of fishermen in the province this year will reap many victories, contributing positively to the socio -economic development of the locality.
Mr. VAN
