Durian exports to the Chinese market increased 10 times thanks to the Protocol. With a lot of good news at the beginning of the year, fruit and vegetable exports aim for the target of 7 billion USD.

Orders in a row

Following the successes in 2023, durian exports to China have been bustling in the first days of the new year 2024. At border gates in Lao Cai, according to information from the Lao Cai Border Gate Customs Branch (Lao Cai Provincial Customs Department), in just the first 3 days of 2024, durian exports to China reached 255 tons, reaching a turnover of nearly 1 million USD (accounting for nearly 36% of total export turnover).

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung - General Director of Vina T&T Group - said that the company is currently actively increasing deliveries to this market. According to Mr. Tung, in 2023, the company exported 400 containers of fresh durian to the Chinese market alone. "In 2023, the company signed an order to export 2,000 containers of durian to the Chinese market. However, the supply of durian for export is not enough, so the company will continue to pay the remaining part of the order to its partners in 2024," said Mr. Tung.

Similarly, Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy - CEO of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Company Limited - said that durian is the company's main export item in 2023, contributing to doubling revenue in 2022.

Durian exports to continue booming in 2024

In China, Vietnamese durian has received quite positive feedback from partners. Currently, businesses are continuing to speed up procedures to export durian shipments to this market.

Sharing about the durian consumption promotion activities of Ameii Joint Stock Company, Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company said that in 2022, the company did not record any revenue from exporting fruits and vegetables from the Chinese market. However, after this market opened to many types of Vietnamese fruits, especially durian, the company changed direction and started to have about 30% of revenue from this market.

“2024 will be a breakthrough year in the Chinese market when there is still a lot of room and potential for exporting fruits and vegetables. After working and approaching Chinese corporations, the company has realized the potential to increase the turnover of processed durian products, so the company will focus on developing and promoting the consumption of these products,” Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien emphasized.

In fact, in 2023, not only did durian exports to China increase dramatically, but other countries also spent a lot of money to buy this "king fruit" from Vietnam. Of which, durian exports to the Czech Republic increased by 28,195%; the markets of Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea also recorded growth rates of 222 - 837% compared to the previous year. Notably, Thailand - the world's largest durian grower and exporter, also spent 96.9 million USD to buy durian from Vietnam in the 11 months of 2023.

Aiming for $3.5 billion

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy assessed that currently 90% of Vietnam's delicious durians have been exported to China. However, considering the total import volume of the market of 1.4 billion people, the market share of Vietnamese durian is only 5%, the rest is from Thailand and Malaysia. Therefore, Vietnam's durian industry still has a lot of potential and the market share could be 40% here within the next 5 years.

“Many Chinese people have not eaten durian, many provinces in China do not have durian, that is a great opportunity for Vietnam. In fact, Chanh Thu's partners also demand a lot but the company is currently only able to supply about 1/10,” said Ms. Vy.

Ms. Vy believes that the market capacity of China's durian market could reach 20 billion USD in the near future. Enterprises expect that the close cooperation between the two countries will continue to open up Vietnamese fruit and vegetable products, accelerate the process of granting more growing area codes and packaging facility codes, creating conditions for Vietnamese agricultural products to continue to explode and conquer this billion-people market.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that the opportunity to export durian to the Chinese market in particular and other markets in general is still very large. In particular, countries that grow this fruit only harvest seasonally, while our country can harvest all year round. This is the monopoly of Vietnamese durian.

In addition, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement has come into effect, making border transportation more convenient. Therefore, Vietnam's increased export of durian to China through land border gates helps save time and costs. As a result, Vietnamese durian has a more competitive price compared to similar products from Thailand.

"In 2023, our country's durian export turnover is estimated to reach 2.3 billion USD. In 2024, durian output will increase, more growing area codes will be granted, and packaging facilities will be qualified for export, so the export turnover could reach about 3.5 billion USD," Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen predicted.
