This is the first year that 100% of the Vietnamese team participating in the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad won medals.
The Hanoi student delegation representing Vietnam included 5 students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. All 5 students won 2 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals.
Two students won Silver medals: Nguyen Ba Linh and Nguyen Xuan Hoang; three students won Bronze medals: Nguyen Thi Thu Minh, Luu Quang Minh and Dam Ngoc Bao Lam.
Director of the Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong awarded certificates of merit to 8 members (including 3 officers, teachers and 5 students).
Congratulating the excellent achievements of the entire delegation, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong affirmed that the quality of mass and spearhead education in the past school year was very impressive. In particular, spearhead education was affirmed through international competitions.
This proud result is the result of the students' own efforts and the close support of the school and family. This is a milestone and a motivation for the students to continue striving for even higher achievements.
Reporting on the delegation's achievements, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tuan, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, Head of the delegation leading students to the exam, said that the exam had nearly 300 students from 53 countries and territories participating, including many countries strong in the fields of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Although the Hanoi students' training period was only about 2 months, they all had a good sense of compliance, always tried their best, and developed their full potential; this made Vietnam one of the very few teams with 100% of members winning medals. This affirmed the serious study and great efforts of both teachers and students of the entire delegation.
In August 2025, the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics will be held in India. Building on the results achieved this year and previous years, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will develop a plan to select teams from high schools in the city to select the best students who are passionate about this subject and will start training early to achieve better results.
Nguyen Ba Linh, a 12th grade Physics 1 student at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, won a Silver Medal at the competition. He shared that despite many difficulties during the competition, the participants always received the attention of their teachers, maintained their mentality, confidence, and determination to complete the competition with the utmost effort.
This year's exam was quite difficult, but my friends and I were determined to try our best and encouraged each other to stay mentally strong to perform at our best. Returning from the exam, in addition to valuable experiences, the team members also got to know, interact with, and learn from many other candidates.
The 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2024 took place in Brazil from August 17 to 27, attracting nearly 300 students from 53 countries and territories. This is the 8th time Vietnam has participated in this competition. Students must participate in 3 parts, including: theory (in 5 hours); data processing (in 3 hours); day and night observation with a total time of 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics is an annual competition for high school students. The competition is held to recognize the important role of Astronomy and Astrophysics in life, in youth education and to enhance international exchange.
The exam is administered by an international committee whose members are leading scientists in astronomy and astrophysics from around the world.
