Vietnam team surpasses Indonesia 13 places in FIFA rankings, but still far behind Thailand

The Vietnamese team has widened the gap with the Indonesian team from 9 to 13 places in the FIFA rankings, after defeating this opponent 1-0 on December 15 in the group stage of the AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship). At the same time, the Malaysian team has a new coach.

How many points did the Vietnam team get?

The victory of the Vietnamese team against Indonesia in the second match of Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup helped them gain 2.37 points in the FIFA rankings. Before that, the 4-1 victory over Laos helped coach Kim Sang-sik and his team earn a total of 3.68 points after 2 consecutive wins, accumulating 1,164.79 points to move up 2 places to 114th in the world.

Compared to the official FIFA rankings announced on November 28, the Vietnamese team with its current position (114 compared to 116) has widened the gap with the Indonesian team from 9 places to 13 places (125 compared to 127 currently). The Indonesian team has played 3 matches, including a 1-0 win over Myanmar, a 3-3 draw with Laos and a 0-1 loss to the Vietnamese team, a total of 1.68 points have been deducted, leaving 1,133.43 points, down 2 places.

On December 19, FIFA will announce the final rankings for 2024. With no FIFA Days scheduled at the moment, only the AFF Cup taking place and gaining points on the FIFA rankings, the current position will remain the same. Thereby, helping the Vietnamese team maintain a safe distance from the Indonesian team, which has been making strong progress recently thanks to the results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Thailand still holds the 97th world ranking despite two wins against East Timor 10-0 and Malaysia 1-0, as they were only awarded 2.92 points to accumulate a negligible total of 1,231.16 points.

In the upcoming matches before the final FIFA rankings for 2024 are announced, the Vietnamese team will play the Philippines away on December 18. Indonesia is off and will host the Philippines at home on December 21. Meanwhile, the Thai team will play Singapore away on December 17.

Malaysia has a new coach, who was an assistant to coach Ange Postecoglou, who is currently leading Tottenham.

On December 16, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) officially appointed coach Peter Cklamovski, 46 years old, Australian, former coach of FC Tokyo (Japan), as the new coach to replace coach Pau Marti Vicente right after the AFF Cup 2024 journey ends.

Mr. Cklamovski was an assistant to coach Ange Postecoglou, who is currently leading Tottenham Club in the English Premier League. During his time working for the Australian team that won the 2015 Asian Cup and won the J-League 1 with Yokohama Marinos Club in 2019.
