Overseas Vietnamese Wave: Who is better than Jason Quang Vinh and Patrik Le Giang?

Since the 2023 season, when V-League teams have been given the "green light" to have overseas Vietnamese players in their squads, there have been stars with Vietnamese blood living abroad who have decided to return to their homeland to contribute.

Among the 10 overseas Vietnamese players playing for V-League teams, we can name the names that regularly play: Jason Quang Vinh (CAHN Club) and Patrik Le Giang (HCMC Club) have both started 10 matches since the beginning of the tournament.

Patrik Le Giang returned to Vietnam in 2023. Although the goalkeeper with Vietnamese and Slovakian blood only had 8 matches with CAHN Club, Patrik's efforts were rewarded when he found his "true love" named Ho Chi Minh City Club.

Goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang

At Thong Nhat Stadium, Patrik Le Giang has flourished. He shined with spectacular saves that helped Ho Chi Minh City FC stay in the league at the last minute in the 2023 season. Then in the 2023 - 2024 season, when he had fully integrated, Patrik Le Giang single-handedly led Ho Chi Minh City FC to a fourth-place finish, with a stable performance of European class. He helped Ho Chi Minh City FC go from a loose defense to a team that was hard to beat.

Jason Quang Vinh is also expected with a magnificent CV: he was the captain of the French U.16 team and Sochaux Club, and played for 8 years in Ligue 2 (France's second division). He is the perfect full-back with speed, jumping ability, defensive skills, and dribbling skills all at a very high level. Jason Quang Vinh has played 14 out of 15 matches for CAHN Club since the beginning of the tournament, including 11 matches playing the full 90 minutes.

Jason's quality of play convinced everyone, as he upgraded the left flank of the CAHN team and perfectly met the tactical requirements of coach Alexandre Polking.

Some other overseas Vietnamese players such as Kyke Colonna (Hanoi FC, 7 starting matches), Viktor Le (Ha Tinh FC, 3 starting matches), Leygley Adou Minh (Ha Tinh FC, 8 starting matches), Thomas Duong Thanh Tung (Binh Dinh FC, all 8 matches played from the bench), or Pierre Lamothe (newly joined Hanoi FC) have not been able to play regularly.

However, it takes time for overseas Vietnamese players who are not fluent in Vietnamese and have just joined a new football and culture to get used to it.

Among the above half-Vietnamese players, defender Adou Minh is leaving the biggest impression. Having played in France, the player born in 1997 has good strength, physique and ability to compete. In all 8 matches he has played with Ha Tinh team, Adou Minh has always played the full 90 minutes (never been taken off the field). He has become an ideal piece of Ha Tinh's defense, helping the home team to remain unbeaten after 11 rounds.

Viktor Le has only started 3 matches (9 appearances in total), but at the age of 21, the player with Vietnamese and Russian blood still has a lot of potential to break out. He has Vietnamese nationality and is ready to wear the U.22 team's shirt if coach Kim Sang-sik "spots" him.

Nationality is the key

The Vietnamese national team always opens its doors to overseas Vietnamese players, such as Mac Hong Quan, Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Filip, or previously Adriano Schmidt and Michal Nguyen.

To upgrade the Vietnamese team, coach Kim Sang-sik will utilize all resources. The appearance of talented players discovered from the V-League such as Dinh Trieu, Ngoc Tan, Ngoc Quang, Vi Hao is proof. Or most recently, striker Nguyen Xuan Son became the first naturalized player without Vietnamese blood to wear the national team jersey in an official tournament.

Xuan Son, Filip or Van Lam, even though they have only half or no Vietnamese blood, are all dedicated, professional and fight for the national flag with all their hearts. Therefore, the issue of origin will no longer be a problem.

The only problem for overseas Vietnamese players is their nationality. Nguyen Filip needs 7 months of playing in the V-League to get Vietnamese nationality. Viktor Le also has nationality. Meanwhile, Jason Quang Vinh, Adou Minh and Lamothe are still waiting.

As for Patrik, it is regrettable that up to now, the goalkeeper of Ho Chi Minh City Club still does not have citizenship, even though coach Kim Sang-sik has "marked" him and is ready to wait to give Patrik an opportunity when he becomes a Vietnamese citizen.

Untangling this knot, the Vietnamese team will welcome a wave of talent to become even stronger.
