How many points did the Vietnamese team accumulate thanks to their achievements at the AFF Cup?

After the first two matches in the AFF Cup group stage, with two victories against Laos with a score of 4-1 and Indonesia with a score of 1-0, the Vietnamese team was awarded 3.68 points. These points were accumulated on the official FIFA rankings announced on December 19, 2024, with the Vietnamese team being the team that increased the most (2 places) to 114th in the world.

Nhờ chiến dịch AFF Cup 2024 thành công, đội tuyển Việt Nam đã tăng bậc trở lại trên bảng xếp hạng FIFA

Thanks to the successful AFF Cup 2024 campaign, the Vietnamese team has risen again in the FIFA rankings.

The Vietnamese team's performance at the AFF Cup 2024 only stalled and was deducted 0.56 points because of the 1-1 draw with the Philippines team on December 18 away.

After that, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team, with the participation of striker Nguyen Xuan Son, the best player of the tournament and top scorer, won a total of 5 consecutive matches.

Including the last match of the group stage against Myanmar with a score of 5-0, two semi-final matches against Singapore with a score of 2-0 and 3-1. Notably, in the final, the Vietnamese team consecutively defeated the Thai team in both matches with a score of 2-1 and 3-2.

This achievement not only helps the Vietnamese team deserve to win the AFF Cup for the third time in history, but also officially marks a rise back in the FIFA rankings after nearly a year of continuous relegation.

Specifically, the journey of winning all 5 matches since the draw with the Philippines has helped the Vietnamese team accumulate 10.22 more points after the 3.68 points added previously, to now have a total of 1,175.01 points and will certainly increase 2 more places to 112th in the world.

This new position of the Vietnam team will be officially updated on the FIFA rankings on February 15. This also means that, if calculated from the lowest position in 2024, the Vietnam team will drop to 119 from the position in the top 100 at the end of 2023.

Now, thanks to the successful AFF Cup 2024 campaign, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team have gradually risen back up the rankings and are currently ranked 112th in the world. Therefore, they can completely approach the top 100 as quickly as possible, if they continue to compete successfully in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers in March (against Laos on March 25 at home).

Meanwhile, after the group stage, the Thai team was deducted 3.51 points, falling one place to 97th in the world. Then, with a 1-2 loss to the Philippines (first leg of the semi-finals), and both final matches against Vietnam, the "War Elephants" were deducted another 6.05 points and continued to fall to 98th in the world.

The current position of the Thai team, in the near future, can be completely usurped by the Palestine team (position 101) due to the very close cumulative points (respectively 1,225.12 points compared to 1,215.87 points). Thereby, this team will be pushed out of the world's top 100 after only a short time back in 2024.
