According to the world football ranking website Football Ranking, the Vietnam team dropped 5 places after losing to Indonesia at the 2023 Asian Cup. The Vietnam team ranked 94th in the world while their opponent ranked 146th.
The defeat to an opponent 50 places lower caused the Vietnamese team to lose 23.26 points, the largest number of points lost in the past 5 years.
Previously, the Vietnamese team lost to Japan in the opening match of the 2023 Asian Cup group stage and was deducted 6.47 points. In total, coach Philippe Troussier's team was deducted 29.47 points after two matches and dropped to 99th place in the world.

If they continue to lose to the top team Iraq in the final match on January 24, the Vietnamese team is at risk of falling out of the world's top 100 (something that has never happened under coach Park Hang Seo), thereby setting an unprecedentedly bad milestone on the FIFA rankings after 64 months (5 years and 4 months, since November 2018).
Over the past year, the mark of French coach Phillippe Troussier has been quite faint when sitting in the "hot seat" of the Vietnamese team. The "Golden Dragons" have lost their number one position in Southeast Asia and have disappointed in the continental arena. The team has lost 7/8 of their most recent matches and gradually lost the trust of fans.
Meanwhile, the victory over Vietnam helped Indonesia rise 4 places in the world rankings, from 146th to 142nd. The Thai team also jumped 9 places in the FIFA rankings, ranking 104th in the world with 1,194.97 points.
The defeat of the Vietnamese team also made the team of coach Philippe Troussier become the first Southeast Asian team to be eliminated from the Asian Cup right from the group stage. In the final match, the Vietnamese team will still be eliminated even if they beat Iraq on January 24, because the Vietnamese team lost to Indonesia and Japan in the head-to-head results.
