Thailand and Indonesia also had coaching crises and now it's Vietnam's turn.

In fact, coach Shin Tae-yong (Korean) of the Indonesian team seemed to have been fired. Before 2024, specifically before the 2023 Asian Cup, experts and football fans in the archipelago country always asked the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) whether to keep coach Shin Tae-yong or not?

PSSI outwardly supports the Korean coach, but in reality they have not renewed the contract with Mr. Shin Tae-yong (the current contract ends after June 2024). PSSI is also quietly preparing a replacement when needed, that is domestic coach Indra Sjafri.

Coach Shin Tae-yong could have lost his job if he had not beaten the Vietnamese team.

Mr. Shin Tae-yong joined the Indonesian team in 2019 and has yet to win any significant titles. Meanwhile, the only major title that Indonesian football has won during the time coach Shin Tae-yong stayed in the archipelago was the 32nd SEA Games championship, which actually belonged to domestic coach Indra Sjafri.

Mr. Shin Tae-yong's salary is very high: more than 1.5 million USD/year (more than 37 billion VND/year, before tax), but his achievements are almost zero. It is inevitable that Coach Shin Tae-yong will face pressure to be fired.

In fact, the Korean coach has only been able to calm down Indonesian football public opinion in the past few months, after 3 consecutive victories against the Vietnamese team, including 1 win in the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup (held in January 2024) and 2 wins in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia (on March 21 and March 26).

That means coach Philippe Troussier's misfortune is coach Shin Tae-yong's fortune. If coach Troussier beats his Korean counterpart, the one who loses his job may be coach Shin Tae-yong, not coach Troussier.

As for the Thai national team, they have recently struggled with the problem of finding a head coach. Since coach Kiatisak Senamuang left the Golden Temple team, Thailand has been in a serious crisis in the coaching position.

Former Thailand national team coach Akira Nishino

In just 4 years, from 2017 to 2021, the Thai team used 3 coaches, from domestic to foreign, from Asia to Europe, respectively Mr. Milovan Rajevac (Serbian), Sirisak Yodyarthai (Thai) and Akira Nishino (Japanese). All 3 failed in different ways.

During the time of coach Akira Nishino, a series of Thai football stars showed their boycott of the national team. Chanathip Songkrasin, Teerasil Dangda, Theerathon Bunmathan, Pansa Hemviboon... often reported injuries before the Thai national team gathered, but then played normally for their clubs, as if no injuries had occurred.

During this period, Thailand lost to Vietnam and Malaysia. They only did not lose to Indonesia, because the two sides rarely met at that time and because Indonesia was also in a coaching crisis at that time as mentioned above.

The situation with the Thai team at that time was so difficult that they almost lost faith in their own choice. By the end of 2021, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) made a decision and drafted a unique contract in the world of professional football: a contract with a term of only 4 months (from October 2021 to February 2022, that is, until the end of the AFF Cup 2020) for coach Mano Polking.

It was not until the time of Coach Mano Polking that the crisis of the head coach of the Thai national team ended. Fortunately, Coach Mano Polking was successful with Thai football, even though initially when FAT chose Coach Mano Polking, they only considered this a temporary solution, with a super short-term contract as mentioned.

That said, the ups and downs of professional football can happen anywhere, in any football culture. Choosing the wrong coach, although it is a mistake for the selectors, is not uncommon in the world of football.

Any football background can make mistakes, it is not certain that a high-priced coach (Shin Tae-yong) will be successful, it is not certain that a European or Asian coach is more suitable for Southeast Asian teams (the case of the Thai national team). It is also not certain that a temporary coach is a bad coach (Mano Polking was successful in Thailand with a contract that was almost temporary). The important thing is how to correct mistakes after each failure!
