
The Vietnamese women's team had an evenly matched match with the No. 1 seed China in the quarterfinals of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025. In this match, the Vietnamese team was underestimated. The four girls Truong Thao My (1.75 m), Truong Thao Vy (1.73 m), Nguyen Thi Tieu Duy (1.74 m) and Bui Thu Hang (1.73 m) faced Hu Duoling (1.77 m), Li Wenxia (1.82 m), Li Yuyan (1.85 m) and Zhou Mengyun (1.85 m) who were physically superior.
However, the Vietnamese team unexpectedly took the lead, at one point 9-5 before reaching 13-12. The girls in red marked and ran well. Thao My succeeded in two of her four shots outside the arc, while her twin sister Thao Vy scored 11 points with many good close-range shots. The game only turned around when Thao My was injured.
However, China, with their experience as world champions, scored consecutive 2-point shots to turn the game around. In the end, the Vietnamese women's team lost with their heads held high with a score of 15-17.
Also in the women's quarterfinals, Thailand lost to Australia 13-21. The Philippines beat Mongolia 19-15, to become the only Southeast Asian representative to advance to the semi-finals against Japan.
Reaching the quarterfinals of the Asian 3x3 Basketball Tournament is still a remarkable achievement for Vietnamese basketball. As it is the first time participating, the women's team is seeded 19th, while the men's team is seeded 20th.
Before entering the quarterfinals, in the group stage, the Vietnamese women's basketball team topped Group C after successively defeating Iran (19-16), Maldives (21-8) and Kazakhstan (22-12). In the main round of Group C, Vietnam won an important victory over host Singapore with a score of (21-10) to secure a place in the quarterfinals, before losing to Japan (10-17).
The 2025 Asian Basketball 3x3 Championship will take place in Singapore from March 26 to March 30. The tournament was first held in 2013 and has now been held for the eighth time. In the men's category, Australia leads with four championships (2018, 2019, 2022, 2024), followed by Mongolia (2017, 2023) and Qatar (2013). In the women's category, Australia also has four championships (2017, 2019, 2023, 2024), followed by India (2013), New Zealand (2018) and China (2022).
Vietnam entered the tournament ranked 19th in Asia and had to compete in the qualifying round before reaching the quarter-finals, successfully finishing 6th overall behind Mongolia, Japan, China, Australia and the Philippines.
