West Ham need a major rebuild. |
The Hammers are currently 17th in the Premier League, 15 points clear of the relegation zone, and are likely to remain in the top flight next season. However, West Ham's board are extremely disappointed with this result, after spending more than £130 million on new players at the beginning of the season.
The Times reports that manager Graham Potter wants to make a major squad overhaul after the end of this season. West Ham's board also want to change the entire look of the team, as they consider many players to be below the club's standards.
At least nine West first-team stars are set to leave in the near future, notably Mohammed Kudus, a star of the team over the past few seasons. Kudus has shown signs of decline this season, although he is still a valuable name on the market. However, his playing style does not suit Coach Potter.
In addition, Emerson Palmieri, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Edson Álvarez, Tomas Soucek, Niclas Fullkrug and Jean Clair-Todibo will also be sold. Two players currently playing for the "Hammers" on loan, Evan Ferguson and Carlos Soler, will also not be retained after their contracts with the club end this season.
In addition, West Ham can also sell a few other players if they receive reasonable offers. Letting a large number of players leave can help West Ham earn a significant amount of money from transfer fees and save on wages, thereby reinvesting in better quality players, creating a good foundation for the new season.
Potter is under huge pressure to deliver positive results early in the 2025/26 season. During his time in charge of West Ham, he won just three of his first 12 games. However, the Hammers have given him time to correct the mistakes made under Lopetegui and former sporting director Tim Steidten.
Next season, manager Potter aims to take West Ham into the European qualification positions, and to achieve that he needs to carry out a radical squad rebuild.
