As the Lunar New Year 2024 approaches, Nhe market becomes even more bustling as hundreds of buffaloes and cows from all over the region are brought here for buying and selling.
From dawn, the market was bustling with homemade carts and trucks carrying cattle. People and livestock flocked in even more as the sun rose.
Today, Mr. Ho Phuc Mau (residing in Khanh Vinh Yen commune) brought 4 calves to Nhe market to sell for profit.
“When I was not yet 20 years old, I followed my father to trade buffalo and cows at Nhe market. Now my 18-year-old son has 2 years of experience following me in this trade. Thus, my family has 3 generations following the buffalo and cow trade at this Nhe market" - Mr. Mau shared.
According to observations, many people when buying and selling buffalo and cows at this market use secret language, slang and clap their hands to fix the price, making it difficult for many strangers to understand.
Regarding this, Mr. Mau explained, the price ranges from 1 to 10 million VND, agreed upon by traders using words such as: Chach, lai, tham, cho, keo, muc, thap, bet, khuom, nap. 500,000 VND will be called "candy", 20 million is "bi tens".
For example, if a trader wants to sell a cow for 18 million VND, they will offer a price of "full payment", and if the buyer offers a price of 17.5 million VND, they will say "full payment of candy tower". If the trader agrees to the above price, he will slap the buyer's hand as if he agrees to sell.
Coming to Nhe market, many people think that choosing buffalo and cows is the easiest because there are hundreds of buffalo and cows, big and small, brought here for selection; buying to raise is also a lot of choice, buying to butcher and sell meat is also the same.
See the buffalo and cow's appearance to earn millions
Where there is supply, there is demand. Many people who buy buffaloes and cows still believe in looking at the appearance of buffaloes and cows to choose gentle, omnivorous, easy-to-raise, fast-growing animals, and avoid buying picky eaters, hot-blooded animals that often gore people, betray their owners... That's why Nhe market has some people who look at buffaloes and cows' appearances to make money.
When buyers need to buy a buffalo or cow to raise, they will ask the "buffalo and cow fortune teller" at Nhe market to help them. When the fortune teller decides that they have chosen a satisfactory animal and should buy it, the buyer will pay the fortune teller from 100,000 to 150,000 VND/time. If they meet a "big" customer, they may be paid from 200,000 to 300,000 VND/time.
Mr. Pham Hung has more than 20 years of experience in reading buffalo and cow physiognomy. He revealed some tips when choosing to buy buffalo and cow: "Mourning head, spiral, sagging jaw. In those 3 things, the door of the house goes out" these are bad buffalo and cow physiognomy that you should not buy.
"Long mouth, jackfruit leaf ears, cage-like butt" or "tall legs, long body, coconut-leaf tail" are good features, grow quickly, have few illnesses, are healthy and are good for breeding.
Not only can he read the appearance of buffaloes and cows, but with many years of experience and frequent presence at Nhe market, Mr. Hung also helps buyers determine the value of buffaloes and cows accurately and at the right price, avoiding being overcharged by the seller and buying too expensive or buying the wrong thing.
“Each market session, I can advise 4 to 5 people, the total amount of money they give me is about 1 million VND, some days it is more” - Mr. Hung shared.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung - Chairman of Khanh Vinh Yen Commune People's Committee - informed that Nhe market has existed for nearly 100 years. The market's name is closely associated with the history of Nhe bridge.
Nhe Bridge was built by French colonialists with reinforced concrete, and King Bao Dai himself attended the inauguration ceremony nearly 100 years ago.
After Nhe bridge was built, there was a large, flat area of land next to the bridge so people organized a market called Nhe market.
During the war against the US, Nhe Bridge was heavily bombed by planes, so the market was moved to another location. After 1975, Nhe Market moved back to its original location and has been operating to this day.
Nhe Market currently holds 12 sessions each month on lunar days, including: 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 25, 27 and 29. Of those 12 sessions, there are 6 main sessions selling buffalo and cows on the 2, 7, 12, 17, 22 and 27, the rest sell pigs, chickens and local agricultural products.
