Faced with the impact of green barriers set by the international market, construction materials businesses are forced to transform and adapt to integration.
Pressure from 'green' barriers
Circular economy, green trade, green consumption, green brands… have been posing many opportunities and challenges for businesses in the integration trend. Nowadays, facing the movements of the world, Vietnamese businesses will be affected by green barriers set by the international market.
In fact, consumer demand for green products is increasingly high. Research by Nielsen Company shows that in Vietnam, about 80% of Vietnamese consumers are willing to pay more to buy products with environmentally friendly materials and green and clean brands. Rakuten Insight's 2023 survey also showed that up to 84% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products.
Meanwhile, Vietnam's major export markets, typically the European Union, are implementing stricter environmental regulations and standards for products and services imported into the region. Accordingly, sustainable development solutions for businesses in the context of green trade should be closely linked to CSR (corporate responsibility), ESG (environment - society - corporate governance), and Net-Zero (net zero emissions) solutions, which are urgent requirements in the business ecosystem.

According to communications expert Nguyen Dinh Thanh, “greening” in production is the key for Vietnamese enterprises to improve their competitiveness and participate deeply in the supply chain, promoting the export of sustainable goods. Accordingly, to build and maintain the image of a green brand, companies need to demonstrate it in their brand statements. The level of expression depends on the level of commitment of the business leader. It can be an adjustment in the statement of business philosophy, vision, mission, and core values of the enterprise.
Recognizing the importance of integration, the construction materials industry has made many innovations in production and business, aiming to meet green standards. Through practice, this is also the inevitable path that businesses must choose to limit dependence on scarce resources, protect the environment and meet sustainable standards in the market.
Accordingly, experts believe that ESG (environmental - social - governance) practices or commitments to sustainable development are no longer a business choice but have become mandatory when the EU has applied carbon emissions tax under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Enhanced access to international markets
As a business in the field of producing artistic bricks in Vietnam, always focusing on developing a sustainable brand, talking to Cong Thuong Newspaper, Ms. Dinh Hoai Giang - General Director of Secoin Joint Stock Company - said that producing green and sustainable building materials is a passport to bring Vietnamese products to the world market.
With the effort to find smart, environmentally friendly solutions, the company's products are now available in Spain, Morocco, Mexico, Brazil and many other countries around the world.
Sharing more solutions towards the goal of green and sustainable, Ms. Giang said that utilizing waste in the production of unburnt construction materials is an important solution that Secoin is applying in the circular production model, bringing many benefits to the environment and economy. At the same time, the solution also helps save natural resources by using waste instead of clay, stone, sand, helping to protect natural resources. In addition, promoting the value of waste materials that are normally discarded, creating a new life cycle for materials.
“By utilizing waste in the production of unburnt building materials, the company can improve economic efficiency by reducing production costs. At the same time, it can create low-cost products (unburnt bricks from waste have lower production costs than traditional bricks)... making an important contribution to building a circular economy and sustainable development. This is a strategic direction for the modern construction industry," said Ms. Giang.

Similarly, last July, Fico Tay Ninh Cement Joint Stock Company (Fico-YTL) also launched the ECOCem green label for its entire cement product portfolio according to sustainable criteria, according to the ISO 14021:2016 emission standard issued by the Global Cement and Concrete Association.
Products with the ECOCem Green Label are produced with a lower proportion of resources, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions into the environment compared to Portland cement (850kg CO₂/ton). Mr. Nguyen Cong Bao - CEO of Fico-YTL - said that the announcement of the ECOCem Green Label for the entire portfolio of Fico-YTL cement products aims to transparently communicate the results of Fico-YTL's efforts in researching and developing environmentally friendly cement products, contributing to promoting a sustainable construction industry and building a greener Vietnam.
Currently, in the national standards system, Vietnam has built 750 standards towards promoting green growth such as: groups of standards on environmental quality, air quality, water quality, waste management, standards on organic agriculture ISO 11041...
According to statistics from the Institute of Construction Materials (Ministry of Construction), construction works use about 40% of energy sources, account for 50% of emissions, create 33% of carbon emissions and 40% of solid construction waste, which have a significant impact on the environment, requiring a transformation. Accordingly, green, environmentally friendly construction materials are gradually becoming an inevitable trend, aiming to realize the goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2050 that Vietnam has committed to the international community.
Assessing the opportunities in green export and green trade of Vietnamese enterprises, Mr. Ta Manh Cuong - Head of Trade Promotion Capacity Development Department - Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade) - said that enterprises proactively pursuing green and sustainable development will create many favorable conditions in the context of implementing new generation free trade agreements.
In addition, businesses that implement green development will find it easier to meet strict environmental standards and regulations in trade agreements. This not only helps to minimize legal risks but also increases the ability to penetrate international markets. Furthermore, businesses that are committed to sustainable development will have a more positive image in the eyes of customers and partners, thereby attracting more customers and enhancing brand value.
