In recent days, the supply chains of large distribution systems such as Saigon Co.op, Central Retail, MM Mega Market as well as many food production enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City have focused their resources to supply goods to provinces and cities affected by storm No. 3 (Yagi) and post-storm floods. Enterprises committed to maintaining the same selling prices, not increasing prices.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Deputy General Director of Saigon Co.op, said that before Typhoon Yagi made landfall, Co.opmart supermarkets in the North proactively increased their stock by 3 times compared to normal days, focusing on vegetables, fruits, rice, instant noodles, instant vermicelli, sugar, cooking oil, MSG, etc.

In areas without electricity due to the storm, Co.opmart uses backup generators to supply normal goods. Co.opmart flexibly sells imported frozen pork and frozen chicken instead of “hot” meat, and increases the transportation of vegetables and fruits from the Central and Central Highlands regions to necessary points of sale.

"Currently, Saigon Co.op has increased its inventory in the North by three times compared to normal, while maintaining 24/7 operation of the distribution center in Bac Ninh. The number of vehicles diverted by Saigon Co.op from other centers to serve the Northern market has increased by three times compared to normal days. In addition to specialized vehicles, the Saigon Co.op Distribution Center has flexibly used compact trucks to be able to move quickly on the road. In addition, vegetables from Dong Nai, Lam Dong and the Western provinces are also transported to the North to meet demand, including more than 200 tons of vegetables and fruits such as water spinach, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes and many other fruits," Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang added.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, currently, at each supermarket in the Northern provinces, shopping demand has increased by 50% compared to normal days. Online orders have increased by 2-3 times, focusing on dry food groups such as noodles, vermicelli, instant pho noodles, dry food, milk, candy... These orders are arranged by staff, making efforts to deliver within the day.

For areas with traffic disruption, Co.opmart is working with customers to find the most convenient delivery solution. In addition to ensuring supply, Co.opmart continues to implement major promotions for essential products. Items discounted from 15-35% include noodles, pho, canned meat, milk, candy, along with a buy 1 get 1 free program; or discounts when buying multiple household products such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, and vegetables.

Similarly, the GO! and Big C supermarket systems in the southern provinces have also increased the supply of vegetables of all kinds to the northern provinces by 100% compared to normal days. Accordingly, the average shipment from Da Lat to the central and northern regions is 40 tons/trip, now increasing to 75 - 80 tons. As of September 11, Central Retail Vietnam (owner of the GO! and Big C supermarket systems) has transported 3 shipments to GO! and Big C supermarkets in the North with about 150 tons of vegetables and fruits.

MM Mega Market system is also increasing food reserves due to concerns about possible supply chain disruptions in localities heavily affected by storms and floods, ensuring adequate supply of fresh goods such as vegetables, fruits, pork... to all provinces and cities in the North; especially Quang Ninh, Hai Phong...

MM Mega Market representative said that the unit has increased to 2 trips transporting vegetables and fruits from Binh Duong and Lam Dong to Hanoi every day (equivalent to 16 tons). The unit is still trying to maintain the most stable supply possible with a commitment not to increase prices of goods, especially fresh items such as vegetables, fruits, meat, fish...

Meanwhile, to meet the demand for goods for supermarkets and distributors, Ho Chi Minh City's manufacturing enterprises have also accelerated production. Ms. Ly Kim Chi, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Food and Foodstuff Association (FFA), said that as soon as she received information that Typhoon Yagi had caused severe damage to the northern provinces, FFA leaders worked with key production units of the Association to assess the supply situation and increase production in the situation of temporary shortage of goods in the North.

Currently, food businesses in Ho Chi Minh City are ready to work overtime, increase production, and bring food to the North to stabilize the market, avoid shortages and increase prices. In addition, FFA member businesses are also donating and supporting people in the North who are facing difficulties due to storms and floods through personal donations, charity programs, or appeals from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade.
