In the first 7 months of 2024, the export turnover of the leather and footwear industry reached about 13 billion USD, an increase of 10% over the same period last year. The Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association forecasts that the export turnover of the industry this year will reach about 26 - 27 billion USD.

Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Xuan, General Secretary of the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association, said that although the industry is growing compared to the same period last year, it is facing many major challenges. Previously, sustainable development activities were mainly initiated and encouraged by importing countries, but now they have been legalized through issued policies.

“The story of the textile and footwear industry as well as the leather and footwear industry will focus on the bottleneck, which is raw materials. If we want to be proactive in supply sources and avoid dependence on external sources, we will have to be proactive in production. Recently, the textile and footwear industry has sent a document to the Ministry of Industry and Trade proposing how to establish and develop a raw materials trading center in Vietnam.

This will solve the problem of increasingly strict traceability requirements for raw materials, clearly shown through the laws that the EU and the US will apply. All of these stories will be related to supply chain traceability... If we can control these stories, we can export successfully...", said Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Xuan.

Overcoming many difficulties and challenges, textile and garment exports have improved, with the industry's total export turnover reaching about 20 billion USD in the first half of this year. Most enterprises have signed export orders until the end of the year, and some enterprises have orders until the first quarter of 2025. Notably, Vietnamese textile and garment products have been exported to more than 110 countries, of which the main export markets for textile and garment are still the US, EU, Korea, Japan, and China.

However, assessing the production and business situation from now until the end of the year, experts said that textile and garment enterprises still face difficulties when many large markets issue new mandatory regulations related to labor and environment in the supply chain and textile waste treatment.

Mr. Truong Van Cam, Permanent Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas), said that many countries are currently introducing trade defense measures, so businesses need information sharing and warnings to help them find solutions to respond.

“Currently, the countries that compete with us or that we export to have put forward many defense measures. For example, recently, Indonesia has put forward measures to impose high taxes, and many other countries. We export to large markets, such as the US, and some other countries have put forward very strict regulations on goods and environmental protection... I think that warnings for businesses are very necessary...”, Mr. Truong Van Cam added.

In 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade forecasts that export growth may exceed the 6% target set...

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has directed the Vietnam Trade Office system in market areas to regularly update information on foreign market situations, regulations, standards, and conditions of foreign markets that may affect Vietnam's import and export activities and make recommendations to localities, associations, and import and export enterprises.
