Ambassador Pham Viet Anh and Acting Director of the Diplomatic Academy Pham Lan Dung attended the event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Hague Academy of International Law.
The Hague Academy of International Law organizes a Celebration Ceremony and scientific conference to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
From May 24-26, the Hague Academy of International Law held a Celebration Ceremony and scientific conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Academy's founding in the city of Hague, the Netherlands.
This important event attracted more than 350 delegates, including Ambassadors, diplomats, judges of judicial bodies such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), legal experts and the world's leading scholars of international law.
In his opening speech at the celebration, Professor Jean Marc Thouvenin, Secretary General of the Academy, emphasized the fundamental role and necessity of International Law for the international community.
Mr. Jean Marc Thouvenin also affirmed that the Academy is a prestigious educational and research institution, recognized for its important contributions to imparting knowledge and raising awareness of international law. Each year, the Academy's Summer and Winter courses attract more than 1,000 students from all over the world. Among the Academy's alumni are Heads of State, Foreign Ministers, Ambassadors, 12 former judges of the ICJ, and former Secretary-General of the United Nations Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
At the scientific conference “Challenges of International Law at the Centenary of the Hague Academy of International Law”, more than 55 speakers who are leading legal experts discussed the role and tasks of international law in dealing with emerging issues such as climate change, pandemics, cyberspace and outer space. These issues transcend national boundaries and require a comprehensive, flexible and adaptable international legal framework to the requirements of a globalized world.

At the invitation of Professor Thouvenin, the Vietnamese delegation attended the Celebration Ceremony and the workshop, with the presence of Vietnamese Ambassador to the Netherlands Pham Viet Anh, Dr. Pham Lan Dung, Acting Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. On the sidelines of the event, Dr. Pham Lan Dung had a private meeting and working session with Professor Thouvenin.
During the exchange, Dr. Pham Lan Dung congratulated the Hague Academy of International Law on this important anniversary and highly appreciated the content of the scientific conference, especially in the context of the recent world situation with many fluctuations, posing many challenges to international law.
Ms. Pham Lan Dung expressed her belief that the Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Academy will create a basis for sending Vietnamese international legal officers to participate in courses and training programs organized by the Academy in both public and judicial fields.
At the same time, Ms. Pham Lan Dung also discussed bilateral cooperation between the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the Hague Academy of International Law.
Professor Thouvenin expressed his willingness to participate in bilateral cooperation activities between the two Academies and acknowledged the cooperation proposals of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in training and building a team of international legal experts.
