Australian Dollar (AUD) Future Trend Forecast
The Australian dollar was one of the worst-performing currencies in the G10 after expectations of a rate cut by the US Federal Reserve were reduced last week. As a risk-sensitive currency, recent negative news that has unsettled market sentiment has put direct pressure on the currency. Despite support from rising global commodity prices and a strong domestic job market, the Australian dollar's "resilience" has disappointed investors.
Data released last week showed inflation is rising again as the US economy remains resilient, meaning US interest rates will need to remain at current levels for months to come.
However, according to analysts, the re-evaluation of the FED's cut expectations has been fully reflected in the Australian dollar price last week, and this week the Australian dollar may partially recover.
The Australian dollar is highly correlated with global growth and market sentiment, if global growth and market sentiment are gloomy it will negatively affect the Australian dollar exchange rate, and vice versa.
“The recent escalation of Middle East geopolitical tensions is posing downside risks to the AUD,” said Carol Kong, currency analyst at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
Investors interested in the currency are also keeping an eye on China’s GDP figures for March and Q1 2024, due out this morning. Any negative data here could weaken the AUD given Australia’s strong trade ties with China.
Alongside the negative news, the Australian dollar exchange rate is also partly supported by the ongoing recovery in global commodity prices, especially iron ore, Australia's main foreign exchange export.
