Djokovic criticized for imitating victory celebration

American Novak Djokovic caused controversy when he celebrated his victory by answering his phone and then hanging up, after his semi-final match with Ben Shelton at the US Open.

"Hang up" is Shelton's familiar victory celebration gesture from the beginning of the tournament. Immediately after beating the home player 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals, Djokovic celebrated the victory in Shelton's way, with a serious expression. Afterwards, the two players shook hands at the net but did not exchange much.

Djokovic criticized for his victory celebration

In previous matches, many American fans thought that Shelton's celebration was somewhat arrogant, especially after the 20-year-old eliminated compatriots Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round and quarterfinals. The media believed that Djokovic wanted to remind his junior about humility by imitating the "hang up" celebration. But Djokovic explained that it was not that serious.

"I just liked his celebration," Djokovic said after the semi-final on September 9. "I thought it was unique and copied it. I stole his celebration."

On social network X , the Serbian tennis player was criticized by many people for this controversial victory celebration. "It was completely unnecessary," wrote tennis journalist Gaspar Ribeiro Lanca. "Shelton is only 20 years old, playing the biggest match of his career in front of his home crowd. He never disrespected Nole."

@Azulon was surprised by Nole's actions. "Djokovic wants to mock Shelton? After retiring, he will face many problems. That is the result of many actions on and off the court."

"I don't understand why Djokovic always acts like the crowd is against him," wrote @kap. "Shelton didn't mock anyone with that celebration." "Don't ask why people don't love Nole like Roger or Rafa," @AntonioT felt uncomfortable with Djokovic's actions.

Shelton said he didn't mind Djokovic's copycat actions. "I found out after the match that he did that," the American said at a press conference after the semi-final. "I don't like people interfering with my celebrations. If you win, you deserve to do things the way you want. I was always taught that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery."

Shelton also received some criticism on social media, for only shaking Nole's hand after the match without congratulating his senior. "Shelton is not mature enough," wrote the account @AnneS. "He should congratulate Djokovic. A child should recognize greatness."

After defeating Shelton, Djokovic has nearly 48 hours of rest before playing the final against Daniil Medvedev. The final will take place at 3am on September 11, Hanoi time.
