On January 31, information from Da Nang Oncology Hospital said that after 6 months of treatment for a "huge" tumor on the lip, the health condition of male patient KL (31 years old, residing in Ia Tul district, Gia Lai) has improved significantly.
Patient L. discovered a lesion on his lower lip 5 years ago and had surgery to remove the lip tumor at a local hospital. After 3 years, the tumor recurred with pain and bleeding... but due to financial constraints, the patient did not seek treatment.
In June 2023, when the ulcerated tumor spread to the entire upper lip to the base of the nose and the base of the two nostrils, partially covering the front of the nose, spreading to both sides, and below to the chin, causing limited mouth opening, difficulty in eating and communicating, patient KL was taken by his family to Da Nang Oncology Hospital for examination and treatment.

Through clinical examination and imaging diagnosis, it was determined that the tumor was 6.5 x 9 x 3.5 cm in size, in the skin of the upper lip, spreading to both sides of the mouth, lower lip, chin, invading the gums of the upper jaw, lower jaw, part of the alveolar bone of the upper jaw, and invading the external nostril above.
The patient was diagnosed with widespread invasive lip cancer and was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
According to the hospital, after 6 months of treatment, the patient's health and mental condition have improved significantly. The patient is now able to eat by mouth.
Doctor Nghiem Tran Vuong said that lip cancer is a common type of oral cancer today. The easily recognizable symptoms that people need to pay attention to are: ulcers that take a long time to heal, tumors appearing or changes in skin pigmentation on the lips...
Notably, according to Dr. Vuong, abnormalities not only appear in the lip area but can also appear in locations such as the jaw. Therefore, when experiencing any abnormal manifestations on the body, the patient needs to be examined and diagnosed by a doctor early.
Doctors also recommend that tobacco use, alcohol abuse, HPV infection and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays are considered to increase the risk of oral cancer.
