According to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, on October 10, Le Quy Don High School (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) recorded 6 students with symptoms of abdominal pain, of which 2 students showed signs of vomiting, after a meal at school.

Of the 6 students who showed these symptoms, 5 were transferred to Saigon General Hospital for monitoring and treatment, while the remaining student remained in the school's medical room. By 5:00 p.m. the same day, the health status of the students had stabilized, they were alert, and were advised to continue monitoring at the hospital for 24 hours.

All 6 students had lunch at school at around 11:30 a.m. with stir-fried rice noodles with grilled meat/grilled spring rolls and chive soup.

The total number of meals provided on October 10 was 1,393, including 1,348 fried rice noodles, 26 vegetarian meals and 19 porridge meals.

According to initial investigation, all 6 students showed symptoms of abdominal pain. In 2 cases, there were also symptoms of vomiting.

These symptoms appeared about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours after eating. These students belonged to 4 different classes: class 11A8 (3 cases), 11A1 (1 case), 11A4 (1 case) and 12A15 (1 case).

Students who did not eat another meal outside of school and 5/6 students who ate breakfast at home with their families did not report similar symptoms in those who ate the same meal.

According to the school report, from October 8 to 10, the school recorded an average of 10 students absent each day, of which about 4 were absent due to illness. There were no cases of absence due to digestive symptoms.

It is known that the school’s lunch is provided by a company in District 1. The food is prepared and transported to the school by truck at around 10am, then distributed in trays and served in the school’s dining room. The eating utensils are collected and brought back to the facility for processing.

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health directs hospitals to closely monitor and treat students suspected of food poisoning.

Currently, the school is working with health authorities to investigate the cause and assess the risks to ensure the safety of students and teachers. Further interventions will be implemented after specific investigation results are available.

Immediately after receiving the information, the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) urgently coordinated with District 3 Medical Center to conduct epidemiological investigation, assess risks and intervene according to the process of handling food poisoning cases.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has directed the hospital to closely monitor and treat the children, and directed the HCDC to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety and Le Quy Don High School to conduct epidemiological investigations and toxicology tests to promptly prevent similar poisoning cases from occurring.
