On April 8, the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province organized a regular press conference on the socio-economic development situation in the first quarter of 2024, in which the Ha Long Bay Management Board informed about environmental protection work in Ha Long Bay.
4 sources of waste from outside 'surrounding' Ha Long Bay
At the press conference, the leader of Ha Long Bay Management Board said that recently, the unit has coordinated with many functional agencies to ensure the business environment on the World Natural Heritage Ha Long Bay.
Authorities organize to collect floating waste in Ha Long Bay
According to the Ha Long Bay Management Board, through the unit's review, it was found that recently there have been 4 sources of huge amounts of garbage generated daily, threatening the environment of the Ha Long Bay World Natural Heritage.
Specifically, from 2022 to present, when localities bordering Ha Long Bay such as Cam Pha City, Van Don District, Quang Yen Town organized to handle the situation of illegal aquaculture, a number of foam buoys, bamboo rafts... were not collected in time and drifted to the rocky islands in Ha Long Bay.
In addition, Ha Long Bay borders Cat Hai District (Hai Phong), a dynamic socio-economic area, where waste is often washed over by the tide.
Not only that, Ha Long Bay is connected to the ocean, so garbage from the sea is constantly carried in by the current.
At the same time, there are still some fishermen who lack awareness and litter the sea while living and fishing around Ha Long Bay, which also increases the source of trash to this wonder.
Not only is it "surrounded" under the sea, but on the shore, many untreated domestic wastewater drains are also directed at the World Natural Heritage Ha Long Bay, partly causing water pollution.
Collected 100 tons of garbage and over 2,000 m3 of foam buoys during the peak cleaning period of the bay.
Faced with the above situation, from 2023, especially after the recent Lunar New Year, Ha Long Bay Management Board has coordinated with Ha Long City People's Committee and other functional agencies to organize a peak period of collecting waste at sea.
Every day, about 20 ships, boats, and 100 people regularly collect trash at 5 tourist routes in Ha Long Bay. To date, the total amount of trash collected is about 100 tons, and over 2,000 m3 of foam buoys.
Ha Long City mobilizes forces and vehicles to collect waste
Mr. Vu Kien Cuong, Head of Ha Long Bay Management Board, said that in the coming time, to protect the environment of Ha Long Bay World Natural Heritage, the unit will coordinate with local authorities to complete the task of planning the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of Ha Long Bay scenic spots in the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050. Deploying the planning for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of Ha Long Bay scenic spots in the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.
In addition, the unit will closely coordinate with the People's Committee of Hai Phong City to develop a policy mechanism to manage the inter-provincial heritage of Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba archipelago; especially focusing on the management of tourism activities, environmental protection, control, collection and treatment of waste sources.
According to Mr. Vu Kien Cuong, through the assessment of the carrying capacity, Ha Long Bay is currently still able to meet the needs of tourists. However, only in a few times, especially in the summer tourist season, there are some famous tourist attractions that are overloaded such as: Dau Go Cave, Thien Cung Cave, Ti Top Beach... In the coming time, this unit will come up with a plan to regulate the number of visitors coming here, at the same time, improve the quality of services at tourist attractions to attract more tourists.
