At the end of 2016, a woman surnamed Li in Guangdong, China went to her local bank to withdraw 10 million yuan (about 34 billion VND) in savings that she had deposited 4 months earlier. However, after checking, the staff immediately informed her that there was no 10 million yuan in her account, but only 62 yuan (about 200,000 VND). The difference between the two numbers was so large that Li was speechless.
The staff even added that it was true that her account initially had 10 million yuan, but the system recorded that the amount had been paid or transferred multiple times. The bank said that this was a normal spending and deduction activity, and had nothing to do with a banking system error. However, Ms. Li said that she had not received any message notifying her of any balance changes during this time.
Feeling that the incident was unreasonable, Ms. Li asked the staff to call the bank branch manager to investigate. They continued to check and found that Ms. Li's account had transferred money a total of 200 times within 4 months. All the money was transferred to a company located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. However, Ms. Li affirmed that she had not transacted or done business with anyone in this area.
At this time, Ms. Ly suddenly remembered that when she deposited the money, a male employee named Wei, who claimed to be a senior manager, had assisted her with the procedure. This person named Wei said that because the amount of money Ms. Ly deposited was of large value, she would be placed on the bank's VIP list and receive a more preferential interest rate than others. However, the bank said that the employee named Wei had resigned 4 months ago.
Things came to a standstill when the bank and Ms. Ly both claimed that the large amount of money lost was the other party's fault. Ms. Ly decided to invite a lawyer and local police to the bank headquarters to clarify the matter.
Sophisticated scam traps that many people fall into
The police asked the bank to cooperate in contacting the employee, Mr. Wei, but after several calls to both him and his family, they still received no response. Based on the information provided by the bank, the police discovered that the employee Mr. Wei had abused his position as a manager to embezzle deposits from customers, and Ms. Li was one of the victims.
With the trick of offering preferential interest rates, Wei's staff gained the trust of customers and agreed to let him directly assist with the procedures. In reality, the money that had just been deposited into the customer's account was tricked by Wei Yuanjun and transferred to the account of a ghost company in Wuhan. On the other hand, the banking system would only record that the customer had spent and transferred money to another place as a normal transfer transaction.
Local police in Guangdong Province immediately tracked down the employee, surnamed Wei, and brought him to justice. However, the employee, surnamed Wei, claimed that all the money he had embezzled from the victims had already been spent. As a victim, Ms. Li believed that the local bank should also be held responsible and sued the bank.
Although all the illegal activities originated from the personal staff of Mr. Wei, the system did not record it so the bank was not aware of the incident. However, the court considered the incident to be serious and the customer suffered great losses, so it ruled that the bank must compensate Ms. Li 50% of the deposit.
After the unfortunate incident, the Shandong Provincial Court and Police also issued a reminder: Customers who want to deposit savings or use financial management packages at banks or any other establishments should be vigilant when they are privately communicated with by staff. Do not rush to believe in offers to deposit money with high interest rates, to avoid being taken advantage of or falling into a scam like the above case. On the other hand, banks need to more strictly control the work activities of employees, to avoid cases where employees take advantage of their positions for personal gain like the above mentioned Wei.
