Many universities plan to adjust their enrollment plans for 2025, in which the admission method based on academic records will have many new points.
Consider the entire 12th grade transcript instead of just using 5 semesters
In 2025, the first batch of students following the 2018 GeneralEducation Program will graduate from high school. Therefore, the university admission plan will also have many changes to suit the new program.
The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the draft regulations on university admissions, a circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of the regulations on university admissions and college admissions in preschool education issued together with Circular No. 08/2022/TT-BGDDT dated June 6, 2022 of the Minister of Education and Training.
One of the notable new points in the draft circular is that with the university admission method using high school transcripts, schools must use the candidates' entire 12th grade academic results.
Currently, many schools using this method only require using the learning results of 5 semesters, that is, the learning results of grade 10, grade 11 and semester I of grade 12.
The draft also clearly states that for the admission method based on academic results and exam results for each subject (including the total score of high school subjects, high school graduation exam scores, foreign language certificates and other assessment results), the subject combination used for admission must include at least 3 subjects suitable to the characteristics and requirements of the training program, including Math or Literature with the assessment weight accounting for at least 1/3 of the total score.
The Ministry of Education and Training also plans to stipulate that a program, major, or training group can use several subject combinations at the same time for admission. At that time, the number of common subjects of the combinations must be included in the assessment, accounting for at least 50% of the total score.
Thus, schools can use unlimited admission combinations, instead of only using 4 combinations as at present, but are constrained by the weighted scores of the subjects.
Also according to the draft, training institutions can organize early admissions in an appropriate manner to select candidates with outstanding abilities and academic achievements.
The early admission quota is determined by the training institution but does not exceed 20% of the quota for each training major or group; ensuring that the early admission benchmark (after equivalent conversion) is not lower than the admission benchmark of the general planned admission round.
Many schools abandon the option of considering academic records.
At this time, many universities have announced their expected plans for regular university enrollment in 2025 and orientations for the following years to align with the new 2018 General Education Program.
In particular, the notable new point is that many schools will increase their own admission methods and sharply reduce, or even completely eliminate, the consideration of academic transcript scores.
From 2025, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will maintain 3 main admission methods, including: Considering high school graduation exam scores (40-50% of the target); organizing and considering specialized competency assessment exam scores (40-50% of the target by major); direct admission and priority admission (10-15% of the target).
In particular, the school will eliminate the form of combined consideration with academic transcripts and considering specialized competency assessment scores organized by the school. Instead, this exam will be used for independent admission for more than 30 majors of the school.
According to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the school has eliminated the consideration of high school transcripts in order to meet the needs of students studying under the new program with the general view of ensuring fairness, transparency, creating favorable conditions for candidates and ensuring improved input quality, meeting the requirements of the modern labor market.
Similarly, in 2025, Ho Chi Minh City National University will reduce admission methods and only retain 3 admission methods, including: direct admission; admission based on the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University; admission based on high school exam results. At the same time, this university encourages units to develop combined admission methods.
In 2025, the National Economics University will continue to eliminate the high school transcript-based admission method and plans to keep 3 admission methods stable compared to 2024, including: direct admission; combined admission and admission based on high school graduation exam results in 2025.
Previously, from 2024, National Economics University no longer considered admission based on academic records.
Explaining the removal of the method of considering academic records, the school representative said that through the admission results of the years, it shows that the group of candidates for specialized schools considering academic records has very good academic performance, almost all of whom meet other conditions regarding competency assessment test scores, high school graduation exam scores, international certificates, etc. The removal of this group of candidates is to reduce the virtual rate when filtering successful applications, with little impact on the overall admission results and the rights of candidates.
In the past few admission seasons, university admission scores based on academic transcripts have been increasing continuously. Even in many majors, candidates with an overall score of 9.5 points/subject still fail the university entrance exam.
This makes the admission method based on high school transcripts face many conflicting opinions about the reliability of high school academic results.
