Rehearsal for investigating and handling food poisoning in school canteens in Yen Dinh

The hypothetical situation is that at noon on X/Y/2025, Dinh Tang Kindergarten organized a lunch for more than 200 students. By noon of the same day, some students showed symptoms of headaches, stomachaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and frequent diarrhea... These students were quickly transferred by teachers to the school's Medical Department for first aid and treatment.

As of 2:00 p.m. the same day, a total of 10 students were transferred to the school's Medical Department for examination and treatment. Of these, 4 were seriously ill and 6 were mildly ill (of the 4 seriously ill patients, 2 had to be transferred to a higher level).

Faced with complicated developments, the kindergarten's Board of Directors called the Health Station for professional support and reported to local authorities and the health sector for direction.

After receiving the information, the District Medical Center was present promptly, coordinated with the District General Hospital to transfer the seriously ill patient to a higher level; reported to the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department and the District People's Committee to mobilize forces and vehicles to the scene to treat and provide emergency care to the patient; investigated, verified, collected samples of specimens and stored food for testing, determined the cause of the poisoning and traced the origin of the food, and handled environmental sanitation.

The exercise aims to model the organization and direction of the implementation of investigation and handling of food poisoning occurring in school canteens; practice implementing technical measures according to food poisoning investigation procedures, effectively handling food poisoning cases with many people in accordance with regulations.

Through that, propaganda to improve knowledge on food safety for management units, owners of units that organize collective kitchens in schools; enhance the role, responsibility and practical skills in investigating/handling when food poisoning occurs in their collective kitchens; enhance the responsibility and skills of medical units in handling and overcoming the consequences when food poisoning occurs, creating close coordination between the government and related departments and branches to respond promptly when food poisoning occurs in the area.
