Stemming from the urgent wishes of the Party Committee, government and people of 5 communes in the southern area of Hai Lang district (Hai Son, Hai Chanh, Hai Truong, Hai Tan and Hai Hoa) and the Department of Education and Training (GD&DT) of Quang Tri province.
On July 26, 1993, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province issued a Decision to establish Nam Hai Lang High School. This was an important event, marking the birth of a new school in a land rich in revolutionary traditions, studiousness and diligence.

After 9 years of teaching and learning, on October 24, 2012, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province signed a decision to change the name of Nam Hai Lang High School to Bui Duc Tai High School, with the goal of promoting education on the homeland's traditions and the tradition of studiousness for students, associated with educating the example of studiousness and rising up of the cultural celebrity, Dr. Bui Duc Tai, "the first pioneer in opening the imperial examinations of Dang Trong", an outstanding son of his hometown Hai Lang, Quang Tri.
During the 30-year journey of construction and development, Nam Hai Lang High School, now Bui Duc Tai High School, has accompanied Hai Lang hometown in construction, innovation and development, making important contributions to the education career of Quang Tri province, gradually affirming its position in the education system of the province, becoming a beloved home for generations of cadres, teachers, staff and students of the school; becoming an educational address to entrust the trust and expectations of the people in the southern land of Hai Lang district.
In the early years of its establishment, the school faced numerous difficulties in terms of facilities, teaching equipment, teachers and students. Facilities for teaching and learning were seriously lacking.
The number of students in the first school year when the bell rang (1993-1994) was only 508, of which the junior high school (9 classes) had 425 students transferred from Hai Chanh junior high school and recruited 2 10th grade classes with 83 students. The students here are from the purely agricultural area of Hai Lang district.

Overcoming difficulties and challenges, Bui Duc Tai High School has made great changes in terms of school size, teaching staff and education quality. Currently, the school has 19 high school classes with more than 700 students. The staff, teachers and employees consist of 52 people, of which 100% are qualified, 11.8% are above standard. The facilities for teaching and learning activities are relatively adequate.
Currently, the school has been invested in by the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province to build in a new location with a spacious campus, spacious, modern and convenient facilities, meeting the requirements of comprehensive innovation in education and training in the new period and having enough conditions to deploy the construction of a school that meets national standards.

Many teachers have won high prizes in competitions for excellent teachers and other competitions at school, provincial and national levels.
