Kremlin denies President Putin phone call with Trump

On November 11, Sputnik quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as stating that there was no phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump after the recent election.

"This is the clearest example of information published by the American media, including from reputable sources," Mr. Peskov added.

The Kremlin spokesman emphasized that the above information is not true and has never happened.

According to Mr. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin currently has no specific plans for any talks between President Putin and Mr. Trump.

Previously, the Washington Post cited an anonymous source saying that President-elect Trump was said to have had a phone conversation with the Russian leader on November 7.

The source said Mr Trump advised Mr Putin not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine and reminded the Russian leader of Washington's "significant military presence in Europe".

Also on November 7, Mr. Trump spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Specific information about the phone call was not disclosed by either side.

During the election campaign, Mr. Trump vowed to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict “within 24 hours,” but did not specify a plan to do so.

However, Russia, which currently has the upper hand on the battlefield, has said it will only accept an outcome that addresses the core causes of the Ukrainian conflict. These, according to Moscow, include NATO's expansion in Europe and Kiev's discriminatory policies towards ethnic Russians.

Meanwhile, Ukraine insists it will only accept a peace treaty in which Russia withdraws all troops, restores Ukraine's 1991 borders and other terms.

On November 9, the Kremlin said that Mr. Putin was ready to discuss Ukraine with Mr. Trump, but that did not mean the Russian president was ready to change Moscow's demands.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed to "positive" signals surrounding Mr. Trump, although the 47th US President-elect is said to be "more unpredictable" than President Joe Biden.

“Trump believes that an agreement that will lead to peace is possible,” Peskov told Rossiya 1. “At least he is talking about peace, not about confrontation or about wanting to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.”
