In response to the news that parents were shocked when their child's 5-year primary school report card had all 10s but was still eliminated in the application round and was not allowed to take the entrance exam to grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, in response to the press, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the admission criteria for grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in the 2023 - 2024 school year have actually been adjusted to create more favorable conditions for students.
A student with a perfect score of 10 still lacks the qualifications to take the entrance exam to grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
Specifically, in the previous school year, in order to be eligible to take the entrance exam to grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, the final report card of all primary school classes had to achieve the title: "Students who have excellently completed the learning and training contents".
When developing this year's enrollment plan, listening to the opinions of teachers and parents, the school adjusted the above criteria to reduce the requirements, replacing "excellent completion" with: "Students complete well the learning and training content" or higher.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, these criteria are built on the basis of Circular No. 30/2014/TT-BGDDT dated August 28, 2014 and Circular No. 22/2016/TT-BGDDT dated September 22, 2016 of the Ministry of Education and Training, ensuring the selection of students who have formed and comprehensively developed basic elements, laying the foundation for harmonious physical and mental development, qualities and abilities. "With such adjustment of criteria, the number of valid applications has increased significantly compared to previous years," the department informed.
Why is the entrance exam for grade 6 so strict?
The question is, why are the criteria so strict in the round of reviewing applications for admission to grade 6 of junior high school, a level that according to the Education Law is a compulsory general education level and does not have "specialized schools or selective classes"?
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the junior high school block of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is where intelligent and talented students are discovered to continue training and nurturing at higher levels.
Every year, the school's 6th grade enrollment always receives the attention and support of the majority of the capital's people, requiring the school to make great efforts and carefully study the industry's regulations to build reasonable enrollment criteria, creating convenience for students, and meeting mission requirements.
However, the representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training also said that he had directed the school to carry out enrollment work; organize teaching according to regulations; listen to and absorb the opinions of parents to study in the coming school years to continue to perfect the criteria to facilitate students and be suitable for teaching and assessment according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.
According to the 6th grade enrollment plan of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted approved and announced by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training last April, to be eligible to take the entrance exam to the school, students must score 167 points out of a total of 17 final exams of the school year, which means that they can only get a maximum of 3 9 points at the primary level, the rest must all score 10 points. In addition, for subjects or educational activities assessed by comments according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (fine arts, music, physical education, etc.), students must be assessed as "completed well" or higher.
Many parents reported being shocked when their children's applications were rejected in the preliminary round even though their report cards all had 10s, but some subjects assessed by comments were only recorded as "completed" instead of "completed well" or "completed excellently".
