Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên17/07/2024

THE NUMBER OF CANDIDATES SCORING 27 POINTS OR HIGHER INCREASED BY 634% COMPARED TO 2023

From the 15-point mark upwards, compared to 2023 and 2022, the total number of candidates achieving this mark increased this year, from 11% (compared to 2023) to 14% (compared to 2022). The higher the score threshold, the faster the number of candidates reaching the corresponding points. At the 18-point mark and above, the recruitment pool increased by 34% (compared to 2023) and 28% (compared to 2022). At the 20-point mark, the recruitment pool this year increased by 1.5 times compared to last year and by 40% compared to the year before.

Yesterday morning, July 17th, the Ministry of Education and Training officially announced the results of the 2024 high school graduation exam and the score distribution for each subject and exam group used for university and college admissions.

From here, the number of applicants started to increase dramatically compared to last year. At the 21.75 point mark, the number of applicants doubled (206%). At the 24.25 point mark, the number of applicants tripled (this year there are 129,585 applicants, last year 42,320). Every increase of 0.25 points resulted in a tens of percent increase in the number of applicants. At the 27 point mark (a score that doesn't guarantee admission to top-tier majors), last year there were 3,681 applicants, while this year there are 23,343, an increase of 634% (and nearly four times the number in 2022). At the 28 point mark, this year the number increased tenfold compared to last year (please note that this score still carries a high chance of failing the first choice), with 7,620 applicants this year compared to 740 last year. At even higher score thresholds, from 29.25 points and above, which in previous years usually only had a few or seven students achieving this score, this year there are hundreds. Specifically, nationwide there are 380 students who achieved 29.25 points or higher in Block C, compared to only 7 last year (an increase of 5,429%)!

THE ENTIRE COUNTRY HAS 19 TOP STUDENTS IN BLOCK C

The most unusual aspect of this year's C-block exam results is that the entire country has 19 top-scoring students, almost perfectly aligned at 29.75/30 (while other blocks only have one top-scoring student each). These 19 students are also not evenly distributed across regions, with 13 concentrated in Bac Ninh province.

Candidates in the Literature exam room at the 2024 high school graduation exam. This year, no province or city nationwide had an average Literature score below average.

To explain the "inflation" of top-scoring students in the humanities and social sciences (Block C), Thanh Nien Newspaper conducted a preliminary statistical analysis of perfect scores (10 points) in the exam subjects and found several advantageous factors for Block C: Candidates taking the History and Geography exams significantly outperformed those taking Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Perfect scores were abundant in History and Geography, while quite rare in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Specifically, the number of perfect scores in each subject was as follows: Physics 55; Chemistry 1,278; Biology 34; History 2,108; Geography 3,175.

In mathematics, there were no perfect scores of 10; the highest score achieved was 9.8, and only 43 candidates reached this level. In literature, there were 2 candidates with a perfect score of 10 (Dong Thap and Nam Dinh ), and 1,843 candidates scored 9.75. Meanwhile, the number of candidates taking the mathematics exam was slightly higher than the number of candidates taking the literature exam.

In other exam blocks, high scores did not fluctuate much.

For other exam blocks, the overall pool of applicants with moderately high scores has seen a slight increase, but there hasn't been much change at higher levels. For example, for the A00 block, the number of applicants with scores ranging from 27 to 28.25 is similar to last year. Therefore, majors that used the A00 combination last year with scores from 23-25 are predicted to see an increase of about 0.5 points.

For the A01 group, the number of candidates with scores from 25.25 to 27 and above is approximately the same as in 2023; for scores from 27.25 and above, the number of candidates is about 30% less than in 2023. Therefore, majors that used the A01 combination last year with scores from 23-25 will increase by about 0.25 points; majors that had a cutoff score of 25 or higher last year will decrease by about 0.25 to 0.5 points.

The number of candidates for the D01 combination with a score of 24.5 or higher is about 30-50% higher than in 2023 (due to the influence of the extremely high scores in Literature, even though English scores were not high). Therefore, majors that accepted the D01 combination last year with scores from 22-24 will see an increase of about 0.25 points. Majors that had scores of 24 or higher last year will see an increase of about 0.5 points.

GRADUATION EXAM RESULTS: AVERAGE GRADES INCREASE, PERFECT SCORES DECREASE

The average and median scores for all subjects in the 2024 high school graduation exam increased compared to the previous year, but the number of perfect scores (10 points) decreased significantly.

According to statistics from the 2024 high school graduation exam data provided by the Ministry of Education and Training, this year there were nearly 10,900 perfect scores (10 points) across all subjects, a sharp decrease compared to last year (over 15,000 perfect scores). The average score for Literature this year reached 7.23 points, higher than in 2023 (6.86 points).

The most common score achieved by candidates in Literature was 8 points, with 85,990 candidates scoring 8 points; in 2023, the most common score was 7 points. There were 1,843 papers scoring 9.75 points; 14,198 papers scoring 9.5 points; 26,758 papers scoring 9.25 points; and 49,254 papers scoring 9 points…

However, no candidates nationwide achieved a perfect score of 10 in mathematics (compared to 12 in 2023), and the number of zeros in mathematics this year was also higher with 14 candidates (compared to 2 in 2023). Nevertheless, the average and median scores in this subject increased compared to last year, reaching 6.45 and 6.8 respectively. The number of failing papers also decreased compared to last year, from 123 to 76 papers in 2023…

English continued to be the lowest-scoring subject among the nine exam subjects. Nearly 43% of the exam papers in this subject scored below average, with 386,861 candidates scoring below 5. The most common score was 4.6. Despite this, 565 papers received a perfect score of 10, an increase compared to 2023 (494 perfect scores).

Although the total number of perfect scores (10/10) in all subjects decreased significantly, some subjects saw a substantial increase. Geography, for example, saw a nearly 90-fold increase in the number of perfect scores compared to last year. Specifically, while there were only 35 perfect scores in 2023, this year the number reached 3,175.

In Chemistry in 2024, 1,278 students achieved a perfect score of 10, compared to only 137 last year. History also saw nearly three times the number of perfect scores compared to last year (from 789 students achieving a score of 10 in 2023 to over 2,100 in 2024).

Conversely, some subjects have seen a significant drop in the number of perfect scores (10/10). In recent years, Civic Education has been known for its abundance of perfect scores. This year, it still has the most perfect scores, with over 3,300 papers. However, the number of perfect scores in Civic Education has decreased sharply compared to last year (nearly 14,700 papers).

History scores have also improved this year, with a significant reduction in the number of papers scoring below average. Specifically, in 2023, this subject had the highest number of candidates scoring below average with 170,237 students, while this year that number has decreased to 92,119 candidates.

Associate Professor Nguyen Duc Son, Rector of Hanoi Pedagogical University, expressed his hope that future exam questions would be more consistent in difficulty, with less disparity in scores across subjects. This would create a common ground for easier assessment of teaching and learning quality.

Provinces and cities that are "exceptionally good at literature"

According to an analysis by Thanh Nien Newspaper, no province or city nationwide has an average score in Literature below average. The lowest is Cao Bang, at approximately 6 points. Only 8 provinces nationwide have an average Literature score below 6.5. Thirty-eight provinces/cities achieved a score between 6.5 and 7.5.

Among the remaining 25 provinces/cities (average score in Literature of 7.5 or higher), 7 provinces/cities have an average Literature score of 8 or higher, including: Ninh Binh 8.17; Tra Vinh 8.09; Nam Dinh 8.05; Ha Nam 8.05; Nghe An 8.04; Thanh Hoa 8; Hai Phong 8.

Nationwide, 92,054 candidates scored 9 or higher in Literature (accounting for 9% of the total number of candidates taking the Literature exam). Specifically, candidates scoring 9 or higher in Literature from these 7 provinces and cities accounted for 1/4 of the total number of candidates scoring 9 or higher in Literature nationwide.

If we consider the percentage of candidates scoring 9 or higher in Literature compared to the total number of candidates, Ninh Binh province tops the list. This province has 3,158 candidates scoring 9 or higher in Literature, accounting for 27% of the total number of candidates taking the Literature exam in the province. 71% of candidates scored 8 or higher (meaning that out of every 10 candidates, only 3 scored below 8).

Second place goes to Tra Vinh, with 26% (681 students, as the total number of candidates from this province is small). Following them are Ha Nam and Hai Phong, both with 23%.

Although only 19-20% of candidates in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces scored 9 points or higher in Literature, because these two provinces have a large number of candidates, each province accounts for 7.6 to 8% of the total number of candidates scoring 9 points or higher nationwide.

Among the remaining provinces and cities, Hanoi ranked only 13th, with an average score of "only" 7.76 in Literature, but it had the highest number of high scores. Hanoi had 17,480 candidates scoring 9 or higher in Literature, accounting for 19% of the country's total. The reason for the high number of high scores but not a significantly higher average score is the extremely large number of candidates taking the Literature exam in Hanoi, 106,636 students (accounting for 10% of the total number of candidates taking the exam).

Among centrally-governed cities, Ho Chi Minh City has the "lowest" average score in Literature, at 6.6. The entire city has only 463 candidates who scored 9 points or higher in Literature, while there were 85,679 candidates taking the exam.
