Technical opening of Thon 3 bridge, connecting the two banks of Co Co river
On the afternoon of April 26, 2024, Thon 3 Bridge (Dien Ngoc Ward, Dien Ban Town) across Co Co River was technically opened to traffic and put into operation. The project is part of the Co Co River dredging project under the Environmental Development and Urban Infrastructure Project to Respond to Climate Change in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province.
Thon 3 Bridge has a width of 22m; including 4 lanes 15m wide, the median strip is 0.5m wide, the pedestrian area and railings on each side are 3.25m wide. Construct a pedestrian bridge under the bridge to connect the scenic route along the Co Co River.
The structure of Thon 3 bridge has a 99m long single-span arch bridge with a road underneath. The two main arches are tilted in a “V” shape, the structure symbolizes the image of a bird flying strongly towards the East Sea, elegant and modern.
Closing the main span of Van Ly bridge
The Quang Nam Provincial Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board held a ceremony to close the main span of the Van Ly Bridge project on the afternoon of December 18, 2024. Van Ly Bridge belongs to the Van Ly Bridge and Access Road Project (with a total investment of VND 575 billion) with a total route length of 7.78km. The project started on September 30, 2023 and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.

Director of the Quang Nam Province Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board - Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong said that by December 18, 2024, after 444 days of construction, the Van Ly bridge had basically been completed, and the upper part was being closed. The Van Ly bridge across the Thu Bon River is designed with a permanent scale, 459.5m long and 9m wide (8m for vehicles and 0.5m wide for each side of the guardrail) and 460m long.
The completion of Van Ly Bridge is of great significance, marking a historical milestone connecting the two banks of the Thu Bon River, connecting the regions between Dai Loc district and Dien Ban town. The People's Committee of Quang Nam province has chosen Van Ly Bridge and the approach road as a project to welcome the 23rd Provincial Party Congress (term 2025 - 2030).
Ensure the plan of Song Thu bridge and An Binh bridge
On February 22, 2022, the project connecting DT609C to National Highway 14B was announced to start construction. According to the contract, the contractor must complete the entire project on November 17, 2024 (duration 999 days).
The total investment of the project is 550 billion VND. The total length of the project is 3.93km; of which, the An Binh bridge across the Vu Gia river connecting Dai Minh and Dai Quang communes (Dai Loc district) is 1,060.45m long. The An Binh bridge is 9m wide (8m for vehicles, 0.5m wide for each side of the barrier and railing).
Song Thu Bridge, part of the project connecting National Highway 14H to DT609C route, has its starting point intersecting with National Highway 14H in Duy Phu commune, passing through Duy Tan commune (Duy Xuyen), crossing Thu Bon river, and its end point intersecting with DH5.DL route, Dai Thang commune (Dai Loc).
The 6km long project started construction on July 24, 2022. Of which, the road section is 5.4km long with a 9m wide base and an 8m wide asphalt concrete surface. Song Thu Bridge is 669m long, 9m wide, and 8m wide. The total investment of the project is 340 billion VND. The project will be constructed in 840 days and is expected to be completed in November 2024.
Both Song Thu Bridge and An Binh Bridge projects were implemented according to the construction plan. However, due to problems with site clearance and lack of land, the road leading to the bridge was delayed. The competent authority has allowed to adjust the implementation time to be completed by September 2025 at the latest. The People's Committee of Quang Nam province has selected the two projects as projects to celebrate the 23rd Provincial Party Congress (term 2025 - 2030).
Repairing the old Cau Lau bridge
Director of the Department of Transport - Mr. Van Anh Tuan said, in order to maintain the bridge's operating capacity, serve the travel needs of people in Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen and neighboring areas; share the traffic of small-tonnage cars, motorbikes, and rudimentary vehicles that have to pass through the new Cau Lau bridge to ensure traffic safety, the Provincial People's Committee has assigned the industry to be the investor of the project to repair the old Cau Lau bridge.
The project to repair the old Cau Lau bridge (on National Highway 1, connecting Dien Ban with Duy Xuyen) has a total investment of 36 billion VND. The project started on September 29, 2024, with a contract implementation period of 365 days.
The old Cau Lau Bridge across the Thu Bon River was built between 1965 and 1970; its average lifespan is 80 years. After a long period of exploitation and extreme impacts of natural disasters, many parts of the bridge have seriously degraded, including the upper and lower sections. To ensure safety, the authorities have banned all types of cars from crossing the bridge.
Repairing the new Cau Lau bridge
The new Cau Lau Bridge (km953+340, National Highway 1), completed and put into operation in 2005, is located on the Vinh Dien bypass. Over time, the bridge has shown some damage affecting the load-bearing capacity of the span structure.
Road Management Area III (Vietnam Road Administration) must organize the implementation of the emergency repair project to ensure traffic safety. During the time of reinforcing the prestressed reinforced concrete box girder, it is necessary to implement a traffic diversion plan. Except for ambulances, buses on the Da Nang - Tam Ky route with a load capacity of less than 5 tons, vehicles on emergency missions, motorbikes, motorbikes, and rudimentary vehicles, the authorities prohibit all cars from crossing the bridge.
The ban on cars and traffic diversion to ensure traffic safety during bridge repairs has been completed in phase 1, starting from 12:00 on December 23 to December 31. Phase 2 is expected to start from 12:00 on February 13, 2025 (January 16, 2025 lunar calendar) and is expected to last until 16:00 on April 5, 2025.
Phong Thu Bridge and Dak Mi 1 Bridge have problems.
Due to the impact of local heavy rain, the positive slope at the location of km85+400 (behind the M2 pier of Dak Mi 1 bridge) on National Highway 14E collapsed, dragging rocks and soil with it. The huge orphaned rock rolled down, causing the Dak Mi 1 bridge deck, span 3, to shift by about 47cm.
On November 25, 2024, Project Management Board 4 (the unit assigned to manage the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 14E) reported to the competent authorities to proceed with the diversion of traffic to other routes. The competent authorities only allow passenger vans with 16 seats or less and vehicles weighing 5 tons or less, motorbikes, rudimentary vehicles, and pedestrians to travel through Dak Mi 1 Bridge.
On the afternoon of December 27, 2024, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province issued an official dispatch prohibiting semi-trailers and trailers from crossing Phong Thu bridge at km8+790 of DT609 route (Dien Tho commune, Dien Ban town) from 0:00 on December 28, 2024. The Department of Transport said that after 5 days since Road Management Area III organized traffic diversion to prohibit cars from crossing the new Cau Lau bridge, the number of vehicles traveling through DT609 route, from National Highway 1 to Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway, increased rapidly, including heavy trucks and container trucks.
The Department of Transport said that Phong Thu Bridge is located right at the curve, where traffic jams often occur when container trucks go in the opposite direction on the bridge due to the narrow width of the roadway (6m). Through regular monitoring and inspection, cracks began to appear along the bridge surface, many cross-beam joints were cracked, and some mobile bridge bearings were tilted.
This damage leads to the weakening of the beam system's horizontal connection, the bridge's load-bearing capacity is reduced, and the Phong Thu bridge is at risk of being unsafe. Therefore, prohibiting the above vehicles from crossing the bridge ensures both the safety of the structure and the safety of human life.
