The bridge connecting the two banks of the Co Co River in Hamlet 3 has been opened for technical traffic.

On the afternoon of April 26, 2024, the bridge in Hamlet 3 (Dien Ngoc Ward, Dien Ban Town) spanning the Co Co River was opened for technical traffic and put into operation. The project is part of the Co Co River dredging project, which is under the project for developing urban environment and infrastructure to respond to climate change in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province.

The bridge in Hamlet 3 has a width of 22m; including 4 lanes of 15m each, a 0.5m wide median strip, and pedestrian walkways and railings on each side measuring 3.25m. A pedestrian bridge will be constructed beneath the bridge to connect to the scenic road along the Co Co River.

The structure of the bridge in Hamlet 3 features a single-span arch bridge 99m long with a road running underneath. The two main arches are inclined in a "V" shape, symbolizing the image of a bird soaring powerfully towards the East Sea, elegant and modern.

The main span of the Van Ly Bridge has been completed.

The Quang Nam Provincial Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works held a ceremony to connect the main span of the Van Ly Bridge on the afternoon of December 18, 2024. The Van Ly Bridge is part of the Van Ly Bridge and access road project (with a total investment of 575 billion VND) and has a total length of 7.78 km. Construction began on September 30, 2023, and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.

[ VIDEO ] - Overview of the Van Ly Bridge construction site:

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Director of the Quang Nam Provincial Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works, as of December 18, 2024, after 444 days of construction, the Van Ly Bridge is basically completed, with the upper section being joined. The Van Ly Bridge, spanning the Thu Bon River, is designed as a permanent structure, with a length of 459.5m and a width of 9m (8m for the carriageway and 0.5m for the guardrail on each side), totaling 460m in length.

The completion of the Van Ly bridge project is of great significance, marking a historical milestone connecting the two banks of the Thu Bon River, linking Dai Loc district and Dien Ban town. The Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee has selected the Van Ly bridge and its approach roads as a project to celebrate the 23rd Provincial Party Congress (2025-2030 term).

Ensure the Thu River Bridge and An Binh Bridge projects are completed.

On February 22, 2022, the project to connect the DT609C road to National Highway 14B was announced to commence construction. According to the contract, the contractor must complete the entire project by November 17, 2024 (within 999 days).

The total investment for the project is 550 billion VND. The project has a total length of 3.93 km; of which the An Binh bridge, spanning the Vu Gia River and connecting Dai Minh and Dai Quang communes (Dai Loc district), is 1,060.45 m long. The An Binh bridge has a width of 9 m (8 m for the carriageway, with 0.5 m wide curbs and railings on each side).

The Song Thu Bridge, part of the project connecting National Highway 14H to Provincial Road 609C, starts at the intersection with National Highway 14H in Duy Phu commune, passes through Duy Tan commune (Duy Xuyen district), crosses the Thu Bon River, and ends at the intersection with Provincial Road 5.DL in Dai Thang commune (Dai Loc district).

The 6km project commenced construction on July 24, 2022. This includes a 5.4km road section with a 9m wide roadbed and an 8m wide asphalt concrete surface. The Song Thu Bridge is 669m long, 9m wide, with an 8m carriageway. The total investment for the project is 340 billion VND. Construction is scheduled to take 840 days and is expected to be completed in November 2024.

Both the Song Thu Bridge and the An Binh Bridge projects are progressing according to schedule. However, due to land clearance issues and a shortage of embankment soil, the access roads to the bridges are behind schedule. The competent authorities have allowed an adjustment to the completion date, no later than September 2025. The Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee has selected these two projects as celebratory works for the 23rd Provincial Party Congress (2025-2030 term).

Repairing the old Cau Lau bridge.

According to Mr. Van Anh Tuan, Director of the Department of Transport, in order to maintain the bridge's operational capacity and serve the transportation needs of the people of Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen, and surrounding areas; and to alleviate the traffic volume of small- грузовые vehicles, motorbikes, and bicycles currently using the new Cau Lau bridge to ensure traffic safety, the Provincial People's Committee has assigned the department as the investor for the repair project of the old Cau Lau bridge.

The project to repair the old Cau Lau bridge (on National Highway 1, connecting Dien Ban with Duy Xuyen) has a total investment of 36 billion VND. Construction started on September 29, 2024, with a contract duration of 365 days.

The old Cau Lau Bridge, spanning the Thu Bon River, was built between 1965 and 1970; its average lifespan is 80 years. After a long period of use and the extreme impact of natural disasters, many parts of the bridge have severely deteriorated, including both the upper and lower sections. To ensure safety, authorities have banned all types of automobiles from crossing the bridge.

Repairing the new Cau Lau bridge.

The new Cau Lau Bridge (located at kilometer 953+340 on National Highway 1), completed and put into operation in 2005, is situated on the Vinh Dien bypass. Over time, the bridge has shown some damage affecting the load-bearing capacity of its spans.

The Road Management Area III (Vietnam Road Administration) must organize and implement the emergency repair project to ensure traffic safety. During the reinforcement of the prestressed reinforced concrete box girders, a traffic diversion plan must be implemented. Except for ambulances, buses on the Da Nang - Tam Ky route with a load capacity of less than 5 tons, and vehicles on emergency duty, as well as motorcycles, mopeds, and other non-motorized vehicles, all cars are prohibited from crossing the bridge.

The first phase of traffic restrictions and diversions for vehicles during bridge repairs has been completed, running from 12:00 PM on December 23rd to December 31st. The second phase is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM on February 13th, 2025 (January 16th, 2025 according to the lunar calendar) and end at 4:00 PM on April 5th, 2025.

Phong Thu Bridge and Dak Mi 1 Bridge experienced incidents.

Due to the impact of localized heavy rainfall, the embankment at kilometer marker 85+400 (behind abutment M2 of the Dak Mi 1 bridge) on National Highway 14E collapsed, bringing down soil and rocks. A very large boulder rolled down, shifting the surface of span 3 of the Dak Mi 1 bridge by approximately 47cm.

On November 25, 2024, Project Management Board 4 (the unit assigned to manage the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 14E) reported to the competent authorities to proceed with traffic diversion through other routes. Authorities only allowed passenger vehicles with 16 seats or fewer, vehicles weighing 5 tons or less, motorbikes, bicycles, and pedestrians to cross the Dak Mi 1 bridge.

The Phong Thu bridge is too narrow and does not meet the requirements for heavy vehicles to pass through at high density. Photo: CT

On the afternoon of December 27, 2024, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province issued a document prohibiting semi-trailer trucks and trailer trucks from crossing Phong Thu Bridge at km 8+790 on provincial road DT609 (Dien Tho commune, Dien Ban town) from 0:00 on December 28, 2024. The Department of Transport reported that, five days after Road Management Area III implemented traffic diversion measures prohibiting cars from crossing the new Cau Lau Bridge, the number of vehicles traveling on provincial road DT609, from National Highway 1 to the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway, increased rapidly, including heavy trucks and container trucks.

According to the Department of Transport, Phong Thu Bridge is located at a curve, a frequent traffic congestion point when container trucks travel in opposite directions across the bridge due to its narrow carriageway (6m). Regular inspections have revealed longitudinal cracks on the bridge surface, cracks in many transverse beam joints, and some movable bridge bearings are tilted.

This damage has led to a weakening of the horizontal connections of the girder system, reducing the bridge's load-bearing capacity and posing a safety risk to Phong Thu Bridge. Therefore, prohibiting the aforementioned vehicles from crossing the bridge ensures both structural safety and human safety.
