While many Android brands are still finalizing the rollout of Android 15, Google has already launched Android 16. In fact, this is the earliest Android OS release in recent years.
Android 16 promises to bring many new experiences to users. |
Android 16 has been in testing since November last year, when Google released the first beta to developers. The next public beta came out in January 2025. Initially, only Google Pixel devices were eligible for testing, but now Xiaomi and OnePlus devices are also included in the testing.
List of phones eligible to install Android 16 beta:
Google Pixel:
- Pixel 9
- Pixel 9 Pro
- Pixel 9 Pro XL
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold
- Pixel 8
- Pixel 8 Pro
- Pixel 8a
- Pixel 7
- Pixel 7 Pro
- Pixel 7a
- Pixel 6
- Pixel 6 Pro
- Pixel 6a
Xiaomi:
- Xiaomi 15
- Xiaomi 14T Pro
OnePlus:
- OnePlus 13
One of the standout features of Android 16 is Live Updates. This feature functions similarly to Live Activities on iOS, but Google’s implementation emphasizes high-priority notifications designed specifically for process-focused use cases like navigation, food delivery, or carpooling.
Photo Picker is another great privacy addition to Android, restricting app access to your entire Media library when uploading photos or videos. Apps can only access photos and videos if you want them to be uploaded. This is even true in Android 16, as it allows users to search from cloud media providers in the Android photo picker.
Google is also working on adding support for select health records in Health Connect. This feature is being tested in the Developer Preview build and may make it to the final release. The new OS also brings Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR), which saves battery by dynamically adjusting the screen refresh rate based on activity.
Android 16 also integrates Gemini AI more deeply, although specifics are still under wraps. Lock screen widgets are returning for the first time since Android 5.0 Lollipop. The next version of Android will also bring a number of small but useful changes.
It is known that Android 16 has also reached the platform's stability milestone and the stable version is confirmed to be released in the second quarter of 2025, before the end of June. Let's wait and see what other interesting features Google will bring to users.
