Passenger Cafe (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) was founded by Luu Bich Ngan and her husband Huynh Chinh Du. This is a familiar meeting place where like-minded souls meet and share many stories.

Connecting hearts

Established in mid-2018, Passenger was initially built with the motto of a vegan restaurant, with no animal products. Raising dogs and cats was not the restaurant's plan. The chance to adopt Thor - the first stray cat - ignited in Ngan's heart the desire to save more dogs and cats. Of the hundreds of dogs and cats they have taken care of over the years, the restaurant has found owners for nearly 50. The restaurant is currently a shelter for more than 20 cats.

Luu Bich Ngan (top row, left photo) hopes that Passenger will contribute to spreading positive energy so that the community can care for, love, and rescue animals more.

Young people love to come here to study and work. Many people who do not have the conditions to raise pets at home choose this friendly and warm Passenger to spread the love from the hearts of animal lovers and from the furry little friends such as: Muop, Bong, Lu, Lily, Ranchu...

Not focusing on profit, the 9X couple said they received many values that are difficult to compare or buy with money. "Everything is maintained with love. Passenger helps me connect with people who love animals and share the same outlook on life. The staff here loves dogs and cats. The shop receives a lot of encouragement from everyone and this gives us more motivation" - Ngan shared.

In fact, the shop faces many difficulties because of its limited space and the smell of animals. In addition, dogs and cats sometimes fight and are difficult to control when there are many strangers around. This requires the shop to make an effort to maintain a clean space and remind customers to be gentler with their "little friends". The shop's revenue is only for business activities, while the cost of taking care of the dogs and cats comes from the couple's main job. Ngan is currently a graphic designer, while her husband is a freelance programmer.

Learn to cherish

According to Ngan, taking care of lovely four-legged angels helps people live more responsibly and know how to love more. "Dogs and cats also have their own emotional language and way of expressing themselves - some want to be alone, some like human scent; some like to cuddle, some are easily grumpy. They need to be loved after wandering around and suffering a lot of pain in the past. I proactively accumulated veterinary knowledge, learned how to communicate, sympathize and cherish them" - Ngan said.

Passenger actively supports many young people who lack experience in raising animals. The shop's Instagram page is a communication channel to find new owners for dogs and cats. Most of the rescued animals are young or sick, some are even abused and abandoned. This reality requires them to be meticulously cared for. That is also the reason why when looking for new owners for the animals, Ngan always takes the time to understand the personality of the adopter, living conditions, basic knowledge... and the key is still love for animals. Some animals are returned because they are difficult to raise, Ngan keeps them at the shop, no longer posting to find new owners. She emotionally said: "Every small progress starts with effort. I give the animals a new life, in return they give me the opportunity to understand myself, gain more confidence and happiness. There are cases where the animals do not survive even after finding new owners, this makes us feel guilty".

From her experience in taking care of the animals, Ngan hopes that adopters should not be prejudiced against animals of domestic origin. "In fact, taking care of native dogs and cats is very simple because they are very smart, adorable and easy to approach. To us, dogs and cats may just be a small life, but they see us as everything," Ngan said.

The 9X owner Bich Ngan and her partner always keep in mind to do their best to save more dogs and cats. They hope that their peaceful place will change people's thinking about pets, thereby caring for and helping small animals when there is a chance. "For me, every time we take care of a creature means we give them a new life, a good life that all animals deserve. I believe there are many hearts willing to help animals." - Ngan emphasized.
