"Tunnels - Sun in the Dark" - the film has moved millions of viewers not only by the heroic historical story, but also by the authenticity in every frame.
One of the biggest challenges in making a film about the war in Cu Chi is to recreate the tunnels - the unique living and fighting space of our army and people. Many filmmakers have given up on this idea because of the seemingly insurmountable difficulties.
The space was narrow and dark, and a film crew of nearly 300 people could not move around the tunnel at the same time. However, these difficulties became the motivation to create a realistic work.
The authenticity in the film lies not only in the brutality of the tunnels, but is also shown right from the casting stage.
Director Bui Thac Chuyen does not look for perfect faces but prioritizes "faces of life" - faces that reflect the harshness of war and the times.
There is no more valuable witness than the one who lived and fought in those dark tunnels. The armed forces hero To Van Duc - a clever engineer, bomb disposal specialist, weapon maker - the prototype of the character Tu Dap in the film and also a valuable measure of the film's authenticity.
More than a film, "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark" is the artist's passion for the nation's history. The authenticity in director Bui Thac Chuyen's film is a reminder that sometimes, reality is majestic and touching enough without any embellishment./.
