“Going towards the sun” - Contemplative poetry of Le Canh Nhac

Previously, I have read quite a lot and written articles about the two poetry collections “Khuc Thien Thai” and “Non Nuoc Dan Troi” by Le Canh Nhac. In the previous poetry collections, Le Canh Nhac always kept the poetic source “Private feelings before and after, complete love for the country”.

A Le Canh Nhac filled with love for his homeland, country, especially his hometown in the Central region, affection for his parents, brothers, friends...

I really like the poem “Phieng Loi Night” in his collection “Non nuoc dan troi”. It can be said that this is one of Le Canh Nhac’s best poems, with these brilliant verses:

" The moon glides across the hill

The tree's shadow seemed to sway.

The sky and earth are blurred

"You made me drunk by dancing"

Or:

" You become ashes of stone

He became the remains of a tree.

His soul turned to smoke

"Wild night sky Phieng Loi" .

Coming to the collection “Going to the Sun”, it is still the same Le Canh Nhac, but in a different dimension. The very name of the collection of poems “Going to the Sun” makes me think that the author is aiming for the light of truth and reason as the poet To Huu said nearly 90 years ago: “ The sun of truth shines through the heart ” (“From then on”). This is a new step forward in the concept and artistic thinking of Le Canh Nhac.

The collection of poems is written quite evenly on many different topics, with a poetic tone that leans towards thoughts and contemplations about life, people's hearts before the ups and downs of history, and the temptation of money. The self-consciousness (which philosophy calls self-reflection) of the individual ego is considered a bright spot in "Going Towards the Sun". This in Le Canh Nhac's previous poetry collections is not as dense and clear as in this collection.

Perhaps the more people live and have more personal experiences, the more opportunities they have to realize things that seem to be so but are not so.

I randomly “grabbed” the poem “Temptation” in the collection “Going Towards the Sun” to read: “ The shining halo / Millions of admiring gazes”, “The pinnacle of sublimation”, “I know which corners of me are dark / Mesmerizing me, not easy to let go / Darkness carries away / Darkness draws back / The thirst of a slave’s madness”,Sweet temptation, bitter seeds / Only hidden when we know how to look at ourselves”.

The temptation of money makes people easily drunk when touching it. The deeper they get into it, the more likely they are to lose control of their behavior, no longer able to distinguish between right and wrong, light and dark. Especially when we are the head of an agency, a unit, a community group..., the ambition for money becomes even more dangerous, to the point of turning people into slaves to it without even realizing it. And as a matter of course: " We tiptoe high/ The darkness grows larger/ The cloak swallows the halo of light" . But " sweet temptations" always carry "bitter seeds" , if we do not " know how to reflect on ourselves".

The second article that I randomly read was “Color of young grass”:

“From the university lecture hall

Twenty years old, thrown into the fire and bullets

The roof of the A-frame tunnel burst in the smoke of the bombs.

Blood soaked the ancient wall

The day Thach Han was red with lightning

How much youth lies under the river

….

We understand

Priceless thing, blood and bones shed

Building the shape of the country today

...

We do not forget, we are not allowed to forget

The years carved into history

The twenties burn themselves into flames

In the stormy journey of four thousand years…”

This is a poem written to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Quang Tri Citadel. The poem creates two contrasting pictures in language. On one side is the heroic sacrifice of our soldiers during the 81 days and nights of fighting to protect the Citadel in 1972, when most of them were only in their twenties, sitting in university lecture halls to continue writing their green dreams. But when the country was at war, they were ready to " put down their pens and follow the military career" ("Chinh Phu Ngam") following the sacred call of the Fatherland. Among them, many left forever, still lying at the bottom of Thach Han River to " build the shape of the country today". And on the other side is another picture after the country was at peace, joining hands to heal the wounds of war and build a prosperous country, bringing a prosperous life to people.

But few people expect that the business world is as harsh as the battlefield . They only differ in the aspect of gaining or losing national independence and gaining or losing money for each person. And strangely, the temptation still clings to people when they get caught up in dirty money, making it very difficult for people to escape the spiral of greed, anger, and ignorance:

By placing these two paintings side by side, the poet wants to bring out the true value and responsibility of each person towards compatriots, comrades, homeland, and country, regardless of whether it is a period of war to protect the Fatherland or a period of peace to build the country today.

It can be said that in the collection “Going towards the sun” we can easily find many articles on the topic of the temptation of money . If you become a slave to money, abuse money for personal gain, sooner or later you will have to pay a high price. “Going towards the sun” by poet Le Canh Nhac is a warning to anyone who has, is and will blindly chase after money.
