The 7th Festival of Then singing and Tinh musical instruments of the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups concluded on the afternoon of November 18. The festival is a meaningful activity, aiming to honor, preserve and promote the fine traditional cultural values of the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups in the unified and diverse culture of the community of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. This festival is also an opportunity for Then singing and Tinh musical instruments to continue to be passed on and resonate.
During the 3 days from November 16-18, at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, nearly 400 artisans and people from 14 provinces/cities brought unique performances imbued with the traditional culture of the community at the 7th Then singing and Tinh musical instrument festival of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic groups in 2024.
The Then singing and Tinh musical instrument festival of the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups is another opportunity for Then singing and Tinh musical instruments to continue to be passed on and resonate.
For the first time, at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, a space imbued with the culture of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic groups was organized on a large scale with special performances introducing the beauty of Then singing and Tinh lute to a large number of people and tourists.
Participating in the performance at the Festival, Meritorious Artist Chu Thi Tha (71 years old, Tay ethnic group, Cao Bang province) shared that the Festival demonstrates the attention of the Party and State to the work of preserving and promoting the values of Then singing and Tinh lute art; contributing to attracting tourists. The Festival also helps promote the development of Then singing movement, attracting many young people to participate, contributing to preserving and developing the heritage of the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups.
Having practiced Then art for nearly 40 years, artist Chu Thi Tha said: In previous years, in Cao Bang, there were only a few Then masters and very few people studying Then art, but thanks to the attention of the Party, Government and Provincial People's Committee, Then has increasingly developed and become more and more diverse, with more and more young people learning to sing Then and play Tinh.
Locally, every year there are exchange programs, art performances of Then singing and Tinh lute, and classes are opened to teach Then singing and Tinh lute. Artist Chu Thi Tha herself also actively participates in classes to teach the art of Then singing and Tinh lute to the young generation, the next generation.

Coming from Dien Bien province, Ms. Bui Thi Hong Anh, a Tay ethnic, shared: "Then singing is a long-standing traditional art, extremely important in the lives of the Tay people in general and the Tay people in Dien Bien in particular. From a very young age, most of us have heard adults and the elderly sing Then and the Then lyrics have been absorbed into our bodies without us knowing."
Coming to the Festival, Ms. Bui Thi Hong Anh expressed: "We are very proud to perform at this year's Art Festival, Hat Then, a type of art that has been recognized by UNESCO in the world. At the same time, this is also an opportunity for us to spread the cultural values of our people to the community."
Then singing and Tinh lute are cultural characteristics of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic groups in the northern mountainous region. Following the footsteps of these ethnic groups in their journey to make a living, Then singing and Tinh lute have been present in the sunny and windy Central Highlands for decades, continuing to affirm the enduring vitality of the heritage and the harmony and unity in the diversity of the cultures of Vietnam's ethnic groups.
Performance by the Cao Bang Province Art Troupe at the 7th Then Singing and Tinh Instrument Festival of the Tay, Nung, and Thai Ethnic Groups
Artist Nong Thi Banh, a Tay ethnic in village 4, Cu Mot commune, Ea H'Leo district, Dak Lak province, originally from Nguyen Binh district, Cao Bang province, moved to the Central Highlands. Because of her love for the art of Then singing and Tinh lute of her people and to ease her homesickness when working far away from home, Ms. Nong Thi Banh, together with Ms. Hoang Thi Thu and some other women who love this art, founded the Then singing and Tinh lute club in village 4, Cu Mot commune. Since its inception, the club has contributed to improving the spiritual life of the Tay ethnic people and other ethnic groups in Cu Mot commune and neighboring communes.
"I have loved singing Then and playing Tinh since I was a child, but when I came to the Central Highlands to do business, I was very sad at first because I had no instrument, no one to play and sing. Later, I had the opportunity to find someone who made the instrument, so I studied on my own and invited some women in the village who were also Tay people from the North to form a Then singing and Tinh playing club. Up to now, the club has attracted 26 participants. Now, the sound of Then singing and Tinh playing often resounds in the mountains and forests of the Central Highlands. I am very happy and hope that young people will continue the precious cultural heritage of their people wherever they are," shared artisan Nong Thi Banh.
Ms. Nong Ha Tuyen was very happy and moved to participate in the Then singing and Tinh lute art festival for the first time.
In a similar situation, Ms. Nong Ha Tuyen, a Tay ethnic, currently living in Lam Dong province, shared: "Today our group brings a Then singing performance about daily life, homeland, love and gratitude to the Party and President Ho Chi Minh for giving the people what they have today."
This is the first time Ms. Nong Ha Tuyen has joined the troupe to perform. She feels very happy and quite nervous, because not only can she sing Then, sing the folk tunes of her people, but she also learns and enjoys the performances of other troupes, thereby understanding more about Then singing and Tinh lute, interacting with other troupes, sharing experiences and good practices in preserving Then singing and Tinh lute in the locality.

Sharing the same feeling, Mr. Lanh Van Tap (Tay ethnic group, mass art troupe of Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province) happily said that the Festival is an opportunity for him to meet and exchange with his ethnic brothers and sisters as well as the Nung and Thai ethnic groups across the country.
Sharing about the movement to develop the art of Then singing and Tinh lute in Bac Giang, Mr. Lanh Van Tap said: "Compared to other art forms, in Luc Ngan, Then singing has developed remarkably. Every year, the Cultural and Sports Center of Luc Ngan district organizes many classes to teach Then singing and Tinh lute. Every year, there are more than 10 classes opened, each class has about 20-30 students, sometimes more than 50 students. There are many Then singing and Tinh lute clubs established in Bac Giang. In particular, in Luc Ngan, the locality is very interested in teaching Then singing and Tinh lute to young people. The classes attract even 5-6 year old children who can sing Then very well. The district's Ethnic Boarding School also has classes to teach Then singing and Tinh lute. In addition, 100% of schools in Luc Ngan have ethnic folk song clubs, including Then singing and Tinh lute".
With the artisans' love for heritage, the support of local authorities, and meaningful activities such as the Festival, the heritage of Then singing and Tinh lute will continue to be preserved, taught and resonate forever./.
