A mistake in the defense of the visiting team Atletico Madrid allowed striker Akturkoglu to open the scoring for the home team in the 13th minute. With the encouragement from the home crowd at Da Luz Stadium, Benfica continued to create many opportunities, especially Vangelis Pavlidis' shot hitting the post, but the first half score was only 1-0.

However, Conor Gallagher's foul on Pavildis in the 50th minute gave the hosts another chance to take a 2-0 lead from the penalty spot, and Argentine star Di Maria made no mistake from Jan Oblak's spot-kick.

Alexander Bah increased Benfica's lead with a header from a corner in the 75th minute and Orkun Kokcu completed the 4-0 win over Diego Simeone's side from the penalty spot, after Reinildo Mandava fouled substitute Zewki Amdouni.

Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a couple of fine saves to deny late efforts, helping the visitors avoid a disastrous defeat.

"It's a shame to lose like this, it's not a good image to bring emotions and there's nothing more to say. At least we didn't play well today.

Sometimes games like this happen, but we can't let that happen because we left a really bad impression. I don't see anything positive to say.

"We were not ourselves, playing like children. No one is saved after what happened today, we have to accept it and move forward," goalkeeper Jan Oblak told Spanish television station Movistar Plus.

The 4-0 win over Atletico was Benfica's biggest home win in the Champions League (along with a 5-1 win over Club Brugge in March 2023) and Atletico's heaviest defeat against Portuguese opponents in the competition.

According to statistics, Atletico have only won one of their last 10 Champions League matches (two draws, seven losses). With their next away match against Paris Saint-Germain in the fourth round, coach Diego Simeone is under a lot of pressure to improve his performance if he wants to continue to hold the "hot seat".

Meanwhile, Benfica are flying high in third place in this season's UEFA Champions League standings, behind only Borussia Dortmund and Brest on goal difference, while Atletico are 23rd with three points.
