According to Dr. Hoang Hong, head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, doctors here have just received two cases of ruptured breast implants.
Hanoi Medical University Hospital has just received 2 cases of ruptured breast implants (illustrative photo).
She was a 55-year-old woman (Hanoi) who had breast implants since 2010. The patient went to Hanoi Medical University Hospital for a general check-up, however, the ultrasound and MRI results showed that the left breast implant had ruptured. The patient said that she did not see any abnormal signs so she did not know that the breast implant had ruptured.
Here, a 31-year-old woman (Ha Nam) was also admitted for examination due to feeling tension and deformity in her left breast. It is known that this woman had a breast implant placed 4 years ago. The X-ray results showed that the patient's left breast implant was ruptured, and the chest cavity around the breast implant had a lot of fluid.
Dr. Hoang Hong said that both cases were indicated for early surgery to remove the breast implants, clean the secretions as well as the silicone gel that escaped around, clean the implant cavity, and replace the new breast implants. At the same time, he warned that if the ruptured breast implants are not detected and treated early, the accumulated fluid can lead to inflammatory reactions, widespread infections, causing breast deformation, requiring long-term treatment. In addition, when the breasts are infected, re-inserting the implants will increase the risk of fibrosis and capsular contracture.
How often should breast implants be checked and replaced?
At the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, many patients with ruptured breast implants due to the implants being left in for too long, over 10 years.
Dr. Hong added that there are many reasons for breast implant rupture such as sharp objects (sewing needles, syringes, knives), strong external forces when the breast implant is of poor quality... The rupture can also be due to the quality of the breast implant manufacturer or after a long period of implantation, the quality will deteriorate and the implant will easily tear.
The US Food and Drug Administration recommends that women replace their breast implants after 10 years and no longer than 15 years.
According to Dr. Hong's recommendation, "women who have breast implants should see a doctor immediately if they have any unusual signs such as swelling, pain, tension, or breast deformity... If no unusual signs are detected, after about 7-8 years, women should have an ultrasound and X-ray to check the implants and should replace them after 10 years."
Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of breast augmentation surgery using silicone implants, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Department of Maxillofacial, Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said:
Advantage
– Breast size will be larger, higher, fuller and will look more youthful.
– The results after surgery will last longer.
– Breast implants come in many types, shapes, and sizes, so you can choose the size and shape that best suits your body and preferences.
Disadvantages
– Pregnancy, menopause, and weight loss after surgery can affect the results of surgery. Come in and consult directly with your surgeon about breast augmentation methods that have the least impact on breastfeeding ability and the least impact over time.
– Implants are not lifelong devices. The longer you have them, the more likely they are to need to be replaced. However, the likelihood of needing to be replaced depends on each person’s body, and the more experienced and skilled the surgeon is, the lower the risk.
