TPO - The Advisory Board of the Visiting Professor Program at VNU-HCM has just approved a list of the first 16 international professors and experts who meet the program's standards to teach directly and online to students.

This is a specific implementation step after VNU-HCM issued the Visiting Professor Program to connect global knowledge, promote innovation and improve the quality of training and research in Vietnam.

The approved list includes professors, associate professors and researchers from many of the world's leading prestigious universities such as Harvard Medical School (USA), University of Toronto (Canada), Technical University of Munich (Germany), Georgetown University (USA), Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Japan)...

These are prestigious experts in fields such as artificial intelligence, microchip design, medicine, biotechnology, ethnology, linguistics, digital agriculture and climate change... The experts will collaborate in research and teaching at member schools and research institutes of VNU-HCM through online and direct forms, promising to bring valuable academic sharing, while creating a solid foundation to improve the quality of research and training programs.

Among the 16 approved candidates, Professor Barbara Rose Gottlieb - Associate Professor of Harvard Medical School and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health - is a representative with extensive experience in medical collaboration in the region.

Professor Barbara has been collaborating with colleagues through the Health Advancement in Vietnam (HAIVN) project since 2017. She was initially involved in developing clinical experiences for medical students, modeled after the Harvard Medical School Practice of Medicine course. Her role has expanded to include joining the HAIVN leadership team, contributing to medical education development, faculty training, and strategic planning.

In 2022, she became co-director of a collaborative study group to promote medical education reform at three medical schools along the Mekong River: Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Vietnam), Puthisastra University (Phnom Penh, Cambodia), and the University of Health Sciences (Vientiane, Laos).”

“I am available to conduct monthly remote training sessions on medical education topics, including curriculum design, professional development, assessment methods, teacher training, communication skills, and care of vulnerable patients. In addition, I am available to conduct face-to-face training sessions in Vietnam, including large-scale workshops and individual training sessions for teachers,” said Barbara.

Professor Barbara also expressed her desire to accompany lecturers of VNU-HCM in topics related to “student health, career development, communication skills and care for vulnerable patient groups.”

List of 16 leading international experts collaborating in the program

Among the 16 professors and experts mentioned above, there are many young faces, and Dr. Pham Hy Hieu is one of them. Dr. Hieu is 33 years old, received his PhD in Machine Learning and Computational Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University (USA) in the period 2017-2021.

He is the first student here to have his tuition and computing infrastructure fully sponsored by Google Brain for his research. Previously, he graduated with honors in Computer Science from Stanford University (USA) in the period 2011-2015 and was awarded the Ben Wegbreit Prize for the best honors thesis.

Previously, in February this year, VNU-HCM issued a Decision on the Visiting Professor Program at VNU-HCM. The goal of the Program is to urgently implement Resolution 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation.

At the same time, continuing to effectively implement Resolution No. 19-NQ/DU, VNU-HCM builds a Visiting Professor Program with the goal of inviting and appointing 100 visiting professors in the period 2025-2030.

In 2025 and 2026 alone, VNU-HCM will invite and appoint 50 visiting professors. Priority will be given to the fields of biotechnology, biomedicine, semiconductor chips, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, materials technology, new energy, international finance, climate change and sustainable development, etc.
