In the early morning of April 16, PSG entered the second leg of the quarter-finals as the favorites, after winning the first leg 3-1 in Paris. Two early goals from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes gave PSG a 5-1 aggregate lead, seemingly putting an end to the confrontation. However, Aston Villa did not give up easily.
The home team then scored three goals in two consecutive halves, leaving PSG shaken in the final minutes. PSG had goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for his excellent performance to secure their ticket to the next round. However, the surprise came when Dembele, not Donnarumma, was named the best player of the match.
The French striker appeared unhappy as he posed for a photo next to his award on the pitch. Images immediately after the award ceremony showed Dembele resolutely refusing to accept the title, before leaving straight down the tunnel. In an interview with Canal+ after the match, Dembele said PSG had created opportunities for Villa by subjectively thinking victory was within reach.
"We thought we were too good. When we were 2-1 up, we thought we had qualified and the game was over," Dembele told French television. "That's how the Champions League works. You face teams with such passionate fans and they can turn things around. We need to be more demanding on ourselves in the semi-finals."
Dembele hopes this match will be a valuable lesson for PSG, the team under the leadership of coach Luis Enrique is aiming for the first Champions League title in history.
"This game will help us in the future," added the Frenchman. "We qualified, we are satisfied. Now it's time to go back to training. We will try to reach the final."
