According to the 1954 Geneva Agreement, Quy Nhon port (Quy Nhon City) was one of three important locations in the South (along with Vung Tau port and Cam Ranh port) chosen as the place to gather troops to move to the North for 300 days and nights (from July 20, 1954 to May 16, 1955).

Implementing the policy of the Party Central Committee, Uncle Ho and the tasks assigned by Inter-zone 5, the Party Committee and people of Binh Dinh organized to welcome and support cadres, soldiers, compatriots and students from the South from the provinces in the area, waiting to board ships to the North. Among the 20,000 people of Inter-zone 5 gathered to the North at Quy Nhon port, there were 10,700 people from Binh Dinh.

From Quy Nhon port – the 300th day of troop transfer to the North, cadres, soldiers, people and students from the South said goodbye to their families and homeland to go to the North to continue the revolutionary cause. That farewell was not only emotional but also deeply meaningful, expressing patriotism and belief in the day of national reunification.

To commemorate this important historical event, in 2004, the Binh Dinh Provincial Party Committee decided to build a symbolic relic of the site where troops were transferred to the North in Quy Nhon. On December 24, 2007, the Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to rank the Quy Nhon Port relic - the 300th day of transferring troops to the North - as a provincial relic, and at the same time built a Monument to Commemorate the North with the theme "Departing to protect the Fatherland".

The memorial for the regrouping to the North was built on the land in front of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted (Quy Nhon City). The 2.5 m high relief block of the memorial depicts the people of the South, including families who reluctantly saw off their children on their way to the North, their eyes filled with hope for a day of reunion in independence and unification.

Upgrading the national relic ranking not only contributes to preserving the cultural and historical values of the locality, but also affirms the important position of Binh Dinh in the journey of national liberation. At the same time, this relic will be a red address toeducate the tradition of patriotism, fostering pride for the young generation, who are continuing to write the aspiration for peace, independence, and prosperity for the country today.
