Voters of the provinces of Bac Kan, Hai Duong, Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa and Binh Thuan petitioned the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to propose adding more holidays to the year.

According to voters, the Dien Bien Phu victory (May 7, 1954) is a major national anniversary every year. This is an event of great historical significance for the nation. Voters propose to study, consider and supplement the 2019 Labor Code to stipulate that the anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory every year is a public holiday, with the entire population having 1 day off. Workers are entitled to take time off from work and receive full pay.

Voters also proposed to consider submitting to the National Assembly an amendment to the Labor Code in the direction of adding one more day off for employees with full pay, which is September 5 every year, the national day for taking children to school, a beautiful custom of the Vietnamese people, to care for the future of the younger generation, demonstrating the concern of parents for their children and the concern of the community for education.

On the other hand, voters suggested considering adding two more days off for National Day (from September 2 to September 5) to create opportunities for workers to take their children to school on the first day of school. This proposal is a very earnest wish of the majority of workers with school-age children.

Many voters who are union members and workers agree with the proposal to add 2 more days off for National Day (from September 2 to 5 every year) because the number of official days off in the year is still limited and to give workers the opportunity to take their children to school for the opening ceremony.

In addition, voters believe that the founding day of the Communist Party of Vietnam (February 3) is a very important day, a major milestone marking a major turning point in the history of the Vietnamese revolution. In order to propagate to all classes of people the historical significance and great leadership role of the Party, voters propose that the National Assembly study and consider including the founding day of the Communist Party of Vietnam in the list of holidays.

Vietnam has 11 official holidays including: New Year's Day (1 day), Lunar New Year (5 days), Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (1 day), Victory Day and International Labor Day (2 days), National Day (2 days).

This number of days off is about 5-6 days lower than the average of Southeast Asia and the world.

Responding to voters' petitions, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung said that the time off for holidays and Tet for workers is researched and proposed based on many factors such as religion, customs, habits, the meaning of the holiday and socio-economic impact.

Adding more holidays and Tet holidays with full pay, in addition to encouraging employees, will also create pressure on employers because these are paid days off for employees.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will coordinate with relevant ministries, branches, agencies and organizations to assess socio-economic impacts and research and advise in the process of amending and supplementing the Labor Code.
