Recently, two 12th grade IT students of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted (Nha Trang City), Phan Minh Hoai and Tran Huu Vu Phuong, completed the software for the Diploma Creation and Verification System using Blockchain technology (block chain technology).
This is a highly practical solution in authenticating diplomas and certificates at educational and training institutions to limit the use of fake diplomas.
Software with many advantages
Sharing with us about the choice of topic, Minh Hoai said: “In fact, in our country, there has been a situation of using fake degrees and certificates for a long time. Especially, in the era of strong technology development, the methods of counterfeiting degrees and certificates are increasingly sophisticated, making it very difficult to detect. Meanwhile, the authentication system is still limited, such as taking a lot of time and cost to authenticate a degree or certificate. Therefore, in the process of researching to implement the topic, we found that Blockchain technology is suitable, because every time there is a transaction or new data, that information will be recorded in a block and connected with previous blocks to form a new chain. Thanks to that, old information in Blockchain technology is not lost”.

According to information from the National Public Service Portal, the time limit for processing a request for diploma authentication is up to 20 days and the cost ranges from VND250,000 to VND500,000.
Authentication by direct methods as before often has to go through an intermediary, causing inconvenience to agencies and organizations as well as risks to information security and personal identity.
With Blockchain technology, the author group Minh Hoai - Vu Phuong can take advantage of the outstanding advantages of security, transparency, and immutability. Based on these advantages, the two students used the Sui Lutris network, a Blockchain network that combines a non-consensus communication mechanism (broadcast) with a consensus mechanism (consensus) to ensure the security of transactions, while ensuring high performance and reducing latency when processing transactions.
In addition, the Sui Lutris network also has the advantage of fast execution time and low usage cost.
When using this degree authentication software, agencies and organizations create information and data about degrees and certificates from a single account. Then, each information about each degree and certificate will be encrypted by the software provider to confirm identity.
Once identity is confirmed, agencies and organizations can use the provided unit's account to decode to ensure that degrees and certificates are not forged or edited.
And when an organization or individual wants to authenticate a specific diploma or certificate, they can use their account to look up and compare information on the system without going through any intermediary.
Through the experiment of providing more than 200 certificates to clubs, projects and programs in the province, the project authors have received positive feedback. In addition, the cost for creating information on degrees and certificates is about 420 VND/creation and there is no cost for authentication.
Continued improvement
Currently, in Vietnam, there is still no published software on applying Blockchain technology in authenticating degrees, so the topic of the software on the Degree Creation and Authentication System using Blockchain technology by Minh Hoai - Vu Phuong can be considered a solution with a creative idea.
According to Vu Phuong, with the goal of designing a convenient, easy-to-use system for non-professional agencies, organizations and individuals, the software is designed with 3 main security layers, including: Account security layer on the website; security layer based on the address on the Sui Blockchain network; security layer based on the RSA asymmetric key pair.
With the method of combining 3 layers of security together, it is impossible to fake information about degrees and certificates on the Blockchain network.

However, this system still has some limitations such as: Cannot create certificates in large quantities; does not allow users to add a certificate template to attach a QR code; does not synchronize all interfaces...
“In the coming time, we will try to increase the coverage of the system, aiming for wider experiments, expanding to many different subjects and organizations. In addition, we will research and develop a revoked degree format, serving many practical cases such as revoking driver's licenses... In parallel with the development of the system, we will also try to perfect the interface and other functions to create a system that is as convenient for users as possible while still ensuring security", Vu Phuong added.
According to Mr. Huynh Ba Loc - Vice Principal in charge of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, in recent times, the scientific research movement of students in the school has been very active.
This year, the school received 17 school-level competition projects, from which 12 projects were selected to participate in the upcoming Provincial Science and Technology Competition for High School Students.
In which, there is a project on the software system for creating and authenticating degrees using Blockchain technology by Minh Hoai - Vu Phuong.
The two students' project had very good ideas. Although there were difficulties during the implementation process, they tried very hard to complete it on schedule and meet the requirements.
From the perspective of an administrator in an educational institution, this software is necessary when authenticating diplomas and certificates, helping to save time, costs as well as documents and papers.
The school also gave suggestions to help the two students improve their software before submitting it to the provincial competition.
Mr. PHAM QUOC HOAN - Director of the Department of Information and Communications: I highly appreciate the group of authors who registered and researched a difficult software topic, which is the Degree Creation and Authentication System using Blockchain technology.
This topic requires a lot of research on very new technology to initially experiment with solving a not-so-new topic - authentication of degrees and certificates.
I hope that Minh Hoai and Vu Phuong will continue to pursue this research direction in the future when they enter universities. Because on October 22, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1236/QD-TTg on the National Strategy on the application and development of blockchain technology until 2025, with a vision to 2030.
Through this, in order to promote domestic potential in Blockchain, the direction of the two students is very suitable for current and future trends.
Tran Huu Vu Phuong won third prize in the Provincial National High School Student Team Selection Competition for the 2023-2024 school year; third prize in the Provincial Science and Technology Competition for High School Students for the 2023-2024 school year. Phan Minh Hoai won second prize in the Provincial Youth Informatics Competition for the 2023-2024 school year; third prize in the Provincial Science and Technology Competition for High School Students for the 2023-2024 school year.
