Potential from renewable energy
With natural conditions and climate, Binh Thuan has great potential for developing electric energy from renewable energy sources (wind power, solar power, hydropower...), serving socio-economic development and has the potential to exploit to become the energy center of the country.
Renewable energy is becoming the main development trend of Binh Thuan today.
During the period from February 2020 to June 2023, Binh Thuan has completed the investment in construction and put into operation 11 more renewable energy power plants with a total capacity of 409.93 MW (including: 5 solar power plants with a total capacity of 175.73 MW; 6 wind power plants with a total capacity of 234.2 MW). Up to now, the whole province has 47 power plants in operation with a total capacity of 6,523.21 MW (including: 4 thermal power plants belonging to Vinh Tan Power Center with a total capacity of 4,284 MW; 7 hydropower plants with a total capacity of 819.5 MW; 9 wind power plants with a total capacity of 299.6 MW; 26 solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,110.11 MW; 1 diesel power plant in Phu Quy island district with a capacity of 10 MW); The designed electricity output of 47 power plants in the province is over 31 billion kWh/year.
Solar power develops strongly in Binh Thuan
In addition, the transmission grid and distribution grid of Binh Thuan province (500 kV, 220 kV, 110 kV, medium voltage and low voltage) have been newly invested, renovated and upgraded in recent times. Up to now, the province is operating 320.628 km of 500 kV lines, 1 Vinh Tan 500 kV transformer station with a capacity of 1,800 MVA; 298.552 km of 220 kV lines, 3 220 kV transformer stations with a capacity of 1,500 MVA; 677.71 km of 110 kV lines, 12 110 kV transformer stations with a total capacity of 1,179 MW; 6,789.45 km of 22 kV medium voltage grid has been invested; 3,344.03 km of low voltage lines and 27,971 22/0.4 kV distribution transformer stations with a total capacity of 2,937.69 MVA.

Energy potentials, especially renewable energy, have been better exploited, the electricity production and distribution industry has grown strongly, which is the main driving force for the province's industrial development. The province has attracted foreign investors, Vietnam Electricity Group and the private sector to invest in developing wind power, solar power and small hydropower. Particularly in the field of investment in distribution grid and electricity trading, Binh Thuan Electricity Company is in charge. The implementation of investment in construction of power source projects and grids in recent years has met the electricity demand for important load components, production, business and people's daily life loads, and met the demand for electricity during the dry season; ensuring safe power supply for major holidays and important local events.

Meet development strategy
Thus, with 47 power plants in operation generating electricity with a total capacity of 6,523.21 MW, the designed electricity output of 47 power plants in the province is over 31 billion kWh/year, along with the power grid system (500 kV, 220 kV, 110 kV, medium voltage and low voltage) that is regularly invested, renovated and upgraded, ensuring safe, stable and continuous power supply for socio-economic development and national security and defense of the province, rural areas, mountainous areas and islands (Phu Quy island district has ensured safe and continuous power supply and maintained stable power supply 24/24 hours; on the island there are currently 10 MW diesel power plants, 6 MW wind power and 0.8 MWp solar power), contributing to providing electricity for the key economic region in the South, ensuring national energy security. In addition, Vinh Tan III Thermal Power Plant (1,980 MW) under Vinh Tan Power Center is preparing for investment, Son My Power Center (LNG), with a total capacity of 2 plants of 4,500 MW, is preparing for investment; 1 wind power plant (29.7 MW) has been completed but not yet connected to the national grid and 2 wind power plants (119.8 MW) are under construction. Currently, 8 investors have registered and proposed offshore wind power projects with a total capacity of 22,200 MW; of which, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have agreed in principle for an investor to study and survey the Thang Long Wind Power Project offshore Ke Ga in Ham Thuan Nam district, with a proposed capacity of 3,400 MW.
Renewable energy is becoming the main development trend of Binh Thuan today. With the total capacity of existing and planned power source projects in the province mentioned above, if the investment is completed, it will meet the goals of the 10-year Socio-Economic Development Strategy (2021 - 2030) according to the Power Development Plan of Binh Thuan province approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, contributing to ensuring national energy security.
