The rapid development of information technology and the Internet brings many benefits but also poses significant risks to children.

In recent times, the Party, the State and the entire political system have taken strong action to protect children on the Internet. Vietnam has built a legal system on protecting children on the Internet, creating an important legal basis such as: Law on Children, Law on Cyber Security, Law on Network Information Security, Law on Access to Information... Article 54 of the Law on Children specifically stipulates the responsibility to protect children on the Internet. Are children abusing technology? How to get children away from TV screens, computers, and phones?
It can be said that the remarkable development of information technology and the Internet brings many benefits to children. They can watch movies, study, use social networks, follow public figures, search for information, chat with friends and relatives, etc.
The advancement of science and technology has helped children to expand their knowledge freely and independently, and become confident global citizens. And this advancement has also helped the education sector in reforming and finding the center of education.
However, according to a report by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, children in our country currently spend 5-7 hours a day on the Internet, 2-3 times higher than recommended. For many children, the habit of using phones, computers and televisions every day has become common.
A worrying fact is that children spend more time on electronic devices for entertainment than for studying. According to psychologists, children are increasingly dependent on electronic devices, a situation that can lead to many serious consequences for children's physical and mental health. Along with that, knowing how to apply technology to learning will become a powerful tool in developing children's thinking.
Sharing at a forum, Ms. Nguyen Thuy Uyen Phuong, an educational researcher and practitioner, affirmed: “The world of technology is not as virtual as people often say, but on the contrary, it has brought very real values. If schools in remote areas cannot equip students with expensive computers, but if each student here has a phone that can connect to the internet, it will be easy to use more utilities and from there, students will be able to broaden their horizons and learn many more things.”
Obviously, science and technology have opened up a flat world, where there are no limits for children to freely explore. Besides, there are also negative aspects that parents and children need to be aware of in order to use technology in the digital age properly and effectively.
Experts also warn that children will face many potential risks, violence, and child abuse through the online environment, which is just as dangerous as in real life, because content, images, and clips are spread everywhere.
So, to make the digital environment safer and healthier for children, what solutions can parents offer to help children improve their social media habits and avoid overusing them for entertainment?
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, Vice Principal of the University of Education (VNU), said that in order to equip children with digital immunity when participating in the online environment, countries have strategies to help students get exposed to online safety education early (6-8 years old). Because this is the age group that parents allow to use the internet independently and is at the highest risk.
According to Mr. Nam, parents need to be updated with knowledge and skills to support their children's online activities, understand the benefits and risks that exist in the digital world, and have the skills to identify when children are at risk of online abuse, as well as know how to respond and where to seek support.
"To teach children to swim, the teacher must also know how to swim and know swimming training methods, the same is true in the 'digital ocean'," said Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam.
On June 3, 2020, the Prime Minister approved the national digital transformation program and Vietnam will become a digital nation by 2030. If parents prohibit their children from using the Internet, they will deprive their children of opportunities to connect, entertain, update information and educate themselves. This will make children fall behind and unable to become global citizens.
But in order for children to be able to use the virtual environment safely, parents also need to be open to updating themselves with digital citizenship skills. At the same time, in the family, parents also need to become role models for safe internet use because in reality, many adults are also making mistakes in using the internet unsafely.
Meanwhile, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, Deputy Director of the Department of Children, Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs, creating a "digital vaccine" for children is necessary, so that children can protect themselves from harmful content on social networks. Children should be educated on how to behave intelligently and use social networks safely to avoid the risk of falling into "black holes" in the virtual world. To do so, it is necessary to provide children with knowledge and skills to protect themselves and interact healthily and creatively in the online environment.
