Beware of flash floods and landslides due to heavy rain

It is forecasted that Lao Cai will have widespread rain, showers and thunderstorms in the evening and night of May 30. There will be scattered moderate rain, heavy rain in some places, with the risk of flash floods and landslides in some mountainous areas.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the North is currently affected by a low pressure trough with an axis at about 19 - 21 degrees North latitude, which is being compressed by cold air and moving south. Meanwhile, this evening and tonight, the wind convergence zone in the North tends to become stronger, with rain in many provinces and cities increasing in volume and spreading widely.

Accordingly, in the evening and night of May 30, localities in the province will have rain, showers and thunderstorms throughout the province, scattered moderate rain, heavy rain in some places. Rainfall in general areas ranges from 15 - 35 mm, in some places over 60 mm.

Rain is likely to concentrate in Bac Ha, Muong Khuong, Bat Xat, Van Ban, Bao Thang districts, Sa Pa town and Lao Cai city.

People need to be on guard against rain appearing after the hot period of the day, which can easily cause extreme phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.

Localized heavy rains are likely to cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides in steep terrain and flooding in low-lying areas; flooding of low-lying streets in towns, townships and the south of the city.
