Since 2017, rubber latex prices have been plummeting, at one point reaching just over 170 VND per degree. However, rubber latex prices in Binh Phuoc province have now risen again to their highest level in the past eight years. This is good news for rubber farmers and latex tappers.
Rubber farmers are delighted as market demand gradually stabilizes.
The family of Mr. Le Van Phung in Cay Da village, Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province) owns 3 hectares of rubber trees.
This is his family's main source of income, but for many years, the price of rubber latex has been low, making life difficult. Last year, the price started to rise slightly, and he felt much more optimistic.
This November, the price of rubber latex skyrocketed to 510 VND/1 degree, about 18,000 VND/kg of latex, 2.5 times higher than 8 years ago, he and other rubber growers were very excited.
"The price of rubber this year is higher than in previous years, and I'm very happy. This price eases some of the burden of making ends meet. The higher the price of rubber, the better the profits for farmers. I hope this price level will last for a few more years," Mr. Phung said.
Mr. Truong Van Don, from Hamlet 7, Tan Hiep Commune, Hon Quan District (Binh Phuoc Province), said that the price of rubber latex this year is more than 200 VND/degree higher than last year, but the production this year is lower than last year.
However, the rebound in prices will help rubber farmers secure a stable income, as well as reinvest in their crops in the following years.
"The current price of rubber latex cannot be compared to its 'golden age,' but compared to previous years, it is already a dream for rubber growers. A stable income will help farmers reinvest in caring for their plantations to achieve higher yields," Mr. Don said.
Mr. Le Van Phung, a rubber farmer in Cay Da village, Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province), is harvesting latex in his family's rubber plantation.
Besides providing income for families, rubber plantations also create jobs for many local laborers during the harvesting season.
The increase in latex purchase price not only makes rubber growers happy but also the workers who tap for hire are happy because their wages will increase accordingly. Those who are familiar with the job and are diligent can earn from 350,000 to 400,000 VND/person/day.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sang, from Cay Da village, Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province), has worked as a rubber tapper for many years. However, due to low rubber prices, his wages are not high enough to make ends meet.
Recently, rubber prices have skyrocketed, and the plantation owners who hired him have increased his wages, which makes him very happy. “My family doesn’t own any land, so I’ve been tapping rubber for others for 7-8 years. This year, rubber prices are at their highest, which benefits the plantation owners, so they’ve also increased our daily wages, which makes me very happy,” Sang said.
The rising price of rubber has brought joy to farmers, especially amid recent difficulties caused by natural disasters and epidemics.
With these encouraging signs, in addition to efficient exploitation, smallholder rubber growers and laborers who make a living from rubber tapping in localities throughout the province are continuing to invest in fertilizers and supplement nutrients for their rubber plantations to increase growth, maintain and develop the crop in a sustainable manner.
Proactive care and stabilization of rubber plantations.
The increase in rubber prices is helping households and rubber workers in Binh Phuoc improve their income and have a more stable life.
Binh Phuoc province currently has over 244,000 hectares of rubber plantations, of which smallholder rubber accounts for about 30%. Rubber trees remain one of the perennial crops that provide a stable source of income for the people, accounting for more than 50% of the province's main perennial crop area.
Although latex prices have been continuously increasing, according to many rubber growers, this year's output has decreased by about 20% compared to last year. The reason is due to the impact of extreme weather, some gardens have not invested much in care due to low prices...
Mr. Le Ngoc Dao, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phu Van commune, Bu Gia Map district (Binh Phuoc province), said: "At this time, the purchase price of rubber latex has skyrocketed to nearly double compared to last year, the highest in the past 8 years."
This is good news for rubber farmers. To ensure good tree growth and high yields, rubber growers should invest in care, reduce the number of tapping cycles, and only tap D3 (once every 3 days) or D4 (once every 4 days).
Exploiting the rubber trees to the point of depleting their latex supply to compensate for periods of low prices will negatively impact their lifespan, latex yield, and plantation quality.
"Over the past period, the relevant authorities have continuously monitored the disease situation and promptly dealt with any outbreaks on crops. As a result, the pest and disease situation on all crops has been at a mild level, with negligible impact on crop growth and development," Mr. Dao added.
Mr. Tran Hai Ha, Head of the Agriculture Department of Hon Quan district (Binh Phuoc province), said: In recent years, when rubber prices have been low, many households have not been enthusiastic about caring for and exploiting rubber trees, so the district has directed localities to propagate and encourage people to maintain rubber tree areas and not cut them down to switch to planting other crops.
In the coming period, if rubber prices remain stable, the district will continue to direct rubber growers to properly care for and harvest their crops using the correct techniques to ensure the long-term effectiveness of this industrial crop.
The sharp increase in rubber prices compared to the beginning of the year has not only helped rubber farmers earn higher incomes, improve their living standards, and achieve stable lives, but has also created more jobs in rural areas.
However, according to Mr. Le Ngoc Dao, the agricultural sector needs to advise people to strictly adhere to local planning and guidelines, and not to rush into expanding planting areas just because rubber prices are rising. This is very dangerous as it will disrupt planning and lead to many negative consequences, such as planting and cutting down trees repeatedly.
