Veteran Vu Thanh Son is feeding frogs.
Veteran Vu Thanh Son, Village 4, Dam Bri Commune, was very excited to introduce his family's new pet: a frog. He said that the frog his family chose to raise was a field frog. The frogs were raised in a tarpaulin-lined tank, surrounded by a B40 mesh frame, and covered with a roof. The tank had a water level of 10 cm, with hard plastic mesh placed so the frogs had a place to rest.
Mr. Vu Thanh Son shared: "We learned this frog farming technique from farmers in the West, Dong Nai. Frogs are amphibians and need to be raised in water. At the same time, frogs are raised in a house with a roof and surrounded by a fence to ensure safety."
Not only veteran Vu Thanh Son, but many other veterans have become familiar with the new type of livestock in Bao Loc. And, the veterans have gathered to establish a cooperative called: Son Lam Phat Frog - Eel Breeding Group. The group has 13 members, most of whom are veterans. The members of the group all choose to raise two main livestock: frogs and eels. The birth of the cooperative originated from the idea of 6 veterans of Village 4, Dam Bri commune.
If Mr. Vu Thanh Son chose frogs as his main livestock, veteran Nguyen Van Lam chose to raise eels. Eels are an animal that mainly lives in mud, their meat is delicious, highly nutritious, and is popular in the market.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lam has chosen the mud-free eel farming method, a new farming technique that has recently been applied by many farmers. The eel tank is built with brick walls and a marble floor. The eels are released directly onto the clean surface of the tank. Mr. Nguyen Van Lam uses nylon threads to tie them into large bundles with long tendrils, providing a place for the eels to live.
"For both frogs and eels, our cooperative applies the latest tank-raising techniques. Frogs have the advantage of growing quickly, reaching a brood in just three months. Raising eels takes longer, taking 12 to 18 months to reach harvest weight. Members of the group evaluate and share farming techniques. Those who have the advantage of raising frogs raise more, while those who specialize in raising eels also raise eels in larger quantities. But we all share the same goal, helping each other to grow and build our family economy," Mr. Bui Thanh Son assessed and added that because Bao Loc has a cool climate, it is not the best climate for livestock such as eels and frogs. Therefore, members of the group must find farming techniques suitable for cool climates like Bao Loc.
"We pay special attention to the hygiene of the tanks. The water in the tanks must be clean, with reasonable inlet and outlet sources, and be changed regularly. Only when the water is clean will the eels and frogs grow quickly. Our cooperative has organized study trips to large eel and frog farms in Long An, and learned a lot of farming experience," Mr. Bui Thanh Son informed.
Not only transferring techniques and supporting each other in animal husbandry, the Son Lam Phat Cooperative Group also completed procedures for its 6 members to access preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank. Although, according to Mr. Bui Thanh Son, raising eels and frogs also encountered many difficulties, including issues with market prices, the members of the group were all attached to this new animal. The trust and efforts of the veterans have made many farmers outside, although not veterans, enthusiastically participate in the group's activities.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Bao, Loc Son Ward, Bao Loc City, has joined the Son Lam Phat Cooperative. He said he has received a lot of support from the members of the group, the veterans. He shared that the enthusiasm of the veterans has motivated him to stick with the frog farming profession.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thom - Vice President of the Farmers' Association of Dam Bri Commune, Bao Loc City, assessed that Son Lam Phat Cooperative is a stable livestock cooperative of the commune. Veterans are the core of the group's activities, with barns built according to standards as well as farming techniques learned and experienced from reality. The eel - frog farming model of the cooperative is gradually spreading in Dam Bri Commune as well as many other localities of Bao Loc City and Bao Lam District.
Members of the cooperative have been supported with preferential loans from credit institutions, helping them have more capital to invest and expand this new livestock on Bao Loc land.
