David Beckham chose Marcelo Weigandt, 24 years old, to replace the right-back position that DeAndre Yedlin just left (transferred to FC Cincinnati a few days ago). The former English player wants to strengthen the best force for Inter Miami to conquer the championships in 2 major tournaments: MLS and CONCACAF Champions Cup.
David Beckham spared no expense in spending heavily to strengthen the squad for Inter Miami, of which he is the president and co-owner.
Defender Marcelo Weigandt is set to join Inter Miami
MLS clubs are still eligible to sign new contracts until the transfer deadline on April 23. Inter Miami is taking advantage of this opportunity to strengthen its squad, after a promising start to the MLS and CONCACAF Champions Cup 2024.
"Inter Miami president David Beckham has convinced Marcelo Weigandt. The player has informed Boca Juniors that he will not renew his contract when it expires in December 2024. The 24-year-old defender also said that he has accepted an offer from Inter Miami in the MLS and wants to join the team soon to play alongside the famous player Messi," said journalist Gaston Edul of TyC Sports (Argentina).
"To get Marcelo Weigandt at this time, surely David Beckham's team will spend a certain amount of money to compensate for the remaining contract of this player. The compensation cost will not be large, because anyway Weigandt will not renew with Boca Juniors", Gaston Edul shared.
Marcelo Weigandt is expected to strengthen Inter Miami, as he has a lot of experience playing in major tournaments such as the Copa Libertadores (similar to the Champions League in Europe). Therefore, he will best support Messi and his teammates in the CONCACAF Champions Cup (the Champions League in North, Central America and the Caribbean).
Messi and teammates have a promising start in MLS and CONCACAF Champions Cup 2024
Coach Tata Martino also confirmed that Inter Miami is looking to add a right-back, following a 2-2 draw with Nashville SC in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 on March 8. Inter Miami are in a strong position to advance to the quarterfinals, needing only a 0-0 or 1-1 draw in the second leg at home at 7:15 a.m. on March 14 to advance. The CONCACAF Champions Cup still uses the away goals rule from knockout matches.
The CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals take place in early April, so the early presence of Marcelo Weigandt will help Inter Miami stabilize the squad and increase their chances.
Messi will break Higuain's scoring record
Messi is having an extremely impressive start to the 2024 season, scoring 4 goals and providing 1 assist in just 4 matches. In total, the 36-year-old Argentine has now scored 15 goals for Inter Miami in 18 matches in all competitions, since July 2023. In the first half of the previous season, Messi also contributed 5 assists for his teammates to score.
Messi is having an extremely impressive start to the 2024 season
With a consistent scoring performance, Messi has risen from 6th place in the list of top scorers for Inter Miami in early 2024 to 3rd place behind Gonzalo Higuain (29 goals in 70 matches) and Leonardo Campana (23 goals in 68 matches).
Messi (with 15 goals in 18 games), can completely reach the 20-goal mark soon and surpass when Inter Miami is about to meet opponents of equal strength in the MLS and CONCACAF Champions Cup such as CF Montreal, Nashville SC and DC United in the near future. In the last 4 games, Messi has scored and assisted in every match, helping Inter Miami to be unbeaten with 2 wins and 2 draws.
