Along with emphasizing the role of youth in political and social activities, International Youth Day is also an opportunity for young people to raise awareness and determination to act to solve challenges and problems that young people are facing, such as education, health, employment, human rights, living environment, etc.; towards fairness, respect for rights and meeting the needs of young people. This year's International Youth Day celebration has the theme "Towards a sustainable future: Green skills for young people," emphasizing the importance of equipping young people with green skills to move towards a brighter, greener and more sustainable future for Vietnam.

Actively acting for a green future

In the context of climate change, the world is entering a green transition, bringing many new economic opportunities for the young generation, by 2030, the green transition is expected to bring 8.4 million new jobs for young people. To master the future and contribute to the green economy, young people need to be equipped with green skills - practical tools and knowledge that help them take advantage of environmentally friendly technologies as well as make environmentally conscious decisions in their work and personal lives.

In this regard, Ms. Pauline Tamesis, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Vietnam, emphasized that currently, we are not meeting the growing demand for green skills. By 2030, 60% of young people may lack the skills needed to thrive in a green economy. "We must address this gap and ensure that everyone has equal access to green skills," Ms. Pauline Tamesis shared.

As Viet Nam strives towards a just energy transition and a net-zero emissions future, it is important to transform the workforce to promote a green and low-carbon economy, said UNDP Resident Representative Ramla Khalidi. Vietnamese youth need to be well-prepared and equipped with green knowledge, skills and competencies to join this workforce; and seize new opportunities to cultivate green jobs and the skills of the future. This is not simply an investment in the potential of young people, but also a commitment to a sustainable world.

Environmental issues are currently one of the top concerns of the people in general and Vietnamese youth in particular. For a peaceful, green Vietnam for future generations, young people need to take action to clean up the environment right now.

The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union pays special attention to and widely deploys programs and movements to protect the environment, with many new, creative and effective contents, attracting a large number of young people to participate, creating a good trend among young people and society. Through that, Vietnamese youth are propagated and disseminated knowledge and skills on environmental protection and climate change prevention and control, so that each young person considers environmental protection a beautiful action, a regular and continuous awareness.

In the first 6 months of 2023 alone, union members nationwide planted nearly 11 million new trees (an increase of more than 5.2 million trees compared to the same period in 2022). Environmental protection and climate change response activities have been widely deployed at all union bases, attracting a large number of young people to participate. Provincial, municipal and affiliated unions continue to effectively implement the program "For a green Vietnam"; the "Anti-plastic waste" movement; the "Let's clean up the sea" campaign; simultaneously launch "Green Sunday" in 2023; propagate and mobilize union members, youth and people to build the habit of 4T (Refuse - Reduce - Reuse - Recycle) and the habit of sorting waste at source. Every year, the Central Youth Union coordinates with units to organize the launching ceremony of the Tree Planting Festival "Forever grateful to Uncle Ho".

In addition, the Youth Union and the Vietnam Youth Union at all levels actively mobilize union members and young people to participate in building new rural areas and civilized urban areas, focusing on environmental criteria. The Youth Union at all levels registers to undertake and organize the implementation of effective models such as: Civilized streets (roads, alleys), building flower roads, youth flag roads, "Model residential areas" models, "Flowering electric poles", "Youth flower gardens", "Youth tree rows" in urban areas; establish and expand volunteer teams specializing in building modern, civilized and smart urban areas.

The activities have continued to affirm the role of the Youth Union in joining local authorities in building a civilized and healthy lifestyle; raising awareness and green skills for youth and people in residential areas, thereby spreading the message of sustainable environmental protection.

In order for environmental activities and movements to be increasingly effective in the coming time, Secretary of the Central Youth Union Nguyen Ngoc Luong said that Youth Union chapters at all levels and each young person need to continue to promote propaganda and raise awareness among young people about environmental protection laws; the harmful effects of plastic bags and plastic waste on the environment, including the marine and ocean environment. In particular, in the context of digital transformation and international integration, union members need to prioritize modern, convenient forms of communication that can spread on social networks, thereby helping young people equip themselves with more knowledge about green skills.

In addition, the focus on improving the capacity and skills of Youth Union, Association, Team officials and core forces in environmental protection and climate change response needs to be paid more attention, in parallel with the task of building and replicating models of environmental protection and climate change response; continuing to support green start-up initiatives among union members, youth and clean production and business models; establishing and maintaining youth cooperatives and cooperatives operating in the environmental field.

At the same time, the Youth Union at all levels is interested in organizing specialized volunteer teams, youth volunteer clubs for the environment, raising awareness among young people and people in classifying waste at source; actively coordinating to participate in inspection and supervision of environmental protection, denouncing environmental violations, waste discharge activities, causing environmental pollution...
