* Fierce debate in the European Parliament: At the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on October 9, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the EU needs to change and Budapest aims to be a voice and catalyst for that. He called for expanding the alliance with the Western Balkan countries.
Regarding Ukraine, according to him, Kiev cannot win on the battlefield but must sit at the negotiating table, while repeating the call for a ceasefire.
The leader also assessed that the EU's economic growth rate over the past two decades was significantly lower than that of China and the US, and accused that the EU's asylum system "simply does not work".
In response, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen said that Hungary was putting European security at risk when Budapest decided to release convicted smugglers related to the migration issue.
Ms von der Leyen also took aim at Hungary's reluctance to join EU partners in helping Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and Budapest's decisions to strengthen ties with Moscow and Beijing.
In addition, the EC President called on Hungary to “serve the cause of European unity” instead of deviating from common values. (Europarl)
* Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrives in Croatia for the third Ukraine-Southeast Europe summit on October 9, planning to discuss a joint response to security challenges and international efforts to implement Kiev's Peace Plan.
